01/08/2017 - A DECISION THAT LASTS

Then Abimelech asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves? Genesis 21.29

Everything that we accomplish must be done in the Lord and before Him, so that it may last. Since God’s gifts are irrevocable, our works by faith must also be so. If there were any better work to be done, it would be revealed to us. With the Most High, there is nothing temporary, incomplete, that needs improvement. There is no such thing as the Lord getting prepared to use us in a different way.

Abimelech as the commander of his army were frightened with Abraham’s prosperity. With a peaceful attitude, they went to request for a deal with the patriarch of the Jews, since they noticed that God was with him. It is necessary that people tremble when they think of us as the Lord’s servants. Thus, even if they are ill-intentioned, they will respect us or change their attitude. We must speak as no one has ever spoken.

The king of Gerar asked Abraham to deal with his children and grandchildren with the same kindness that he was dealt with in the past. In fact, because of this, Abraham did not stand strongly against Abimelech when the kings servants took the wells of water that the Patriarch had dug. The position that Abraham took seemed to be spiritual, as he spoke to the Lord about the injustice that he suffered in the hands of that king.

Abimelech convinced Abraham, though he hid his real purpose, they made a covenant. However, the servant of God did not lose the opportunity to rebuke him because of the wells that his servants took. The philistine monarch pretended not to know about it. Probably, he felt how dangerous it is to mess with a property of someone who serves God and has a covenant with him. For the Patriarch, this undid the confusion that had started previously.

Abraham took some sheep and cows and gave them to Abimelech. However, he separated seven sheep, which caught the attention of that king. Our attitudes, whether they are spiritual or material, must always impress those who are evil in their hearts. Many times, small acts that are inspired by the Lord speak more than a million words. When God directs us, it is for a good reason indeed. Seek His direction!

Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech, and gave him seven sheep as a confirmation that it was the patriarch that dug the well called Beersheba – the well of oath. Thus, whatever happened after that moment had only one responsible person: the king of Gerar. That covenant gave Abraham the right to execute justice in those days, in case the same facts happened. If a kind and honest talk ends a conflict, how much more will a talk in the Lord!

Abimelech and the chief of his army went back to their land, and Abraham planted in that place and invoked the Name of the Lord, the eternal God. Be firm in the truth; if you are, many problems will be avoided. However, let the Holy Spirit use you at all times. Remember this: whoever is directed by the Omnipotent is His child.

In Christ, with love,

Lord! Our decisions must be made to last, therefore they need Your consent. Abraham was frustrated with the attitude of Abimelech’s servants when they took the well that he had dug – a fact that the king had ignored.

Many times, something insignificant can bring a great confusion. When Abraham saw that the king of Gerar came to seek him, he knew that his prayer was heard, for a bad deal is still much better than a battle, in which lives are lost. Father, help us in everything.

Your servant’s prosperity made the philistine ruler seek for conciliation. In the past, he made use of the same kindness from the patriarch, and now he asked the same. May we always use something to seal our agreements, and then, the matter will be settled before You.
