He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. Proverbs 17:5

Once, as I talked with a certain preacher about a church where I received healing for my sight, he mocked the church, saying, “Oh! That animal barn”. He talked about the church in such a way because the temple was made of wood, built by non-professionals, and with no beautiful appearance. But that comment made me very sad. In order not to be impolite, I replied only in my own heart, “It is so, it looks like an animal barn, but this was the place where I was healed.”

At the time, I was a member at that preacher’s church. It was a very beautiful and modern temple, and the preacher was a doctor. I was 22 years old, and worked selling clothes from door to door. Right when I heard those words, a desire came to my heart to show him that I disliked what I heard, but prudence helped me from being harsh with the angel of that church. On the night of my healing, I was returning from a service at my congregation, and decided to enter that “barn”.

The Lord forbids that we mock the poor, especially of those who are called to do His will. The word poor, on this verse, refers to the needy, which may be those lacking material goods or the Word of God. Now, he who does not have the light of heaven is filled with problems. Many times, this person makes inappropriate decisions, and does not know what is right and wrong, for he is in the path of evil.

The problematic need mercy, they need our precious time of prayer so that they can be freed from the kingdom of darkness. If we allow the devil to use us to shame them, we will be reproaching our Maker. Why this morbid pleasure of mocking someone? Now, the enemy may use anyone who does not have the divine grace in many dirty ways, but those who insult the Lord will not go unpunished!

Another dangerous attitude is to rejoice with someone’s calamity, even if this person is someone who hates and harms you. Satan uses calamity in order to shame, hurt, and kill someone. The Lord desires that we all come to the full knowledge of the Truth so that we may be saved. Therefore, always help who is in need, for in so doing, you will help this person not to be destroyed by the enemy.

You will please the Lord if you make good use of the opportunities to announce the Good News. In difficult moments, everyone listens to the Truth. If you help the needy, you will be remembered before the Father as an obedient son, for He ordered us to be merciful with those who suffer with calamity (Mt. 5:7; 1 Pe. 3:8). Thus, the Lord’s heart will rejoice with your obedience.

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
