Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said: “We are yours, o David; we are on your side, o son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! for your God helps you.” So David received them, and made them captains of the troop. 1Chronicles 12.18

Those were tough days for David. Although he had taken away the reproach from Israel when he defeated Goliath (1Samuel 17), King Saul wanted him dead. But the Most High gathered godly men—warriors—who voluntarily joined the son of Jesse. When receiving a group from the tribes of Benjamin and Judah (his own tribe), the king tested them (1Chronicles 12.16,17). Then the Spirit of God came upon Amasai, and David received them.

The Most High never forsakes those who trust in his word. In David’s case, God moved the hearts of people who were sensitive to his voice, and little by little those heroes came closer to David, the anointed one. This serves as a lesson to those who today are called by the Lord. If they act as David did, using exclusively the weapons of righteousness, the Almighty God will draw closer to them people who will truly help them.

The people whom God draws closer have one different feature in relation to other warriors: they are full of the Spirit of God in the presence of the man of God. The others show hatred or other inadequate feelings, but those who are sent by the Lord speak his words, and despite being able to make decisions on their own, they don’t. One of the things that prove that someone is a child of God is that he or she is not afraid of what can happen to him or her.

Those days were full of trouble to those who joined David. And being on David’s side could cost their own lives. Still today, the evil spirit that possessed Saul uses tricks to try to frighten the servants of the Lord. The saddest thing for a child of God is seeing those who once claimed to be on his side retreat in face of the smallest threat.

Those warriors declared themselves servants of David. God’s servants also serve those who have been entrusted with a mission from the Lord. They will always show that they are ready to lose whatever needs to be lost, to suffer anything that is necessary, and undergo hardship and suffering, because they see God’s call as their top priority.

The servants of God know how to recognize a person who is sent by the Lord, so they help him out, and will never be afraid of standing by the side of the person whom God chose and sent. Those who seek first the kingdom of God will be received by the Almighty God firstly. Examine yourself: have you been doing that which God asked you to do?

In Christ, with love,
