And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. Matthew 18.34

To forgive is one of most beautiful and blessed things we can do. When we forgive, we become more like the Lord, who forgives us of all our sins. He set the example and we must follow it. In this passage of the Scriptures, Jesus tells us that forgiveness of our debt, by the Lord, is greater than anything we can do for our neighbor, because what we have with God is infinitely greater than what we imagine or would ever be able to repay.

A certain king wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. Just for you to have an idea, in those times, a laborer would make 20 denarii a day. A talent contained about six thousand denarii, i.e. 300 days of labor. Multiplying ten thousand talents by 300, we would have 3 million days of labor, which when multiplied by 20 reais, would be equivalent to 60 million reais. Not even if he was sold as a slave, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, his debt would be repaid.

Since parables convey a meaning by the use of comparison, Jesus wanted to show his audience that we are unable to pay for our sins. The servant therefore fell down before the king, begging for mercy. The king was moved with compassion, and forgave him the debt. But the servant whose debt had been forgiven went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, or one hundred reais. Since the fellow servant could not repay him, that servant threw him into prison.

So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they came and told the king. The king was angry and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!’ Having been forgiven such great debt, he should have also forgiven his fellow servant instead of throwing him into prison. This parable teaches us that, if we act as wicked, the forgiveness we have already received will be cancelled.

Jesus taught us that lesson so that we do not suffer any losses by withholding forgiveness to anyone who has sinned against us. Our debt was impossible to be repaid, so if we were forgiven of such great debt, why shouldn’t we forgive those who owe us much less? Only a wicked heart could act in this manner. The servant had his forgiveness cancelled and was delivered to the torturers. It is never good to act in a wicked manner.

Jesus never taught anything without a purpose, or merely to create controversy. He spoke about all those who do not follow his example and do not do the will of God. There are many people in spiritual prisons, being oppressed by torturers, because they acted in a wicked manner towards their debtors.

We will be treated according to the same measure that we treat our fellow servants in faith in Jesus (Luke 6.38). If we want God to have compassion on us, we must show compassion to those who have offended us. Otherwise, the torturers will “take care” of us. Have we not offended our Father on a much greater scale?

In Christ, with love,

Merciful Father, the day will come when we will be held accountable for our actions and we will be judged according to the light of Truth. If we have repented, confessed our sins and received forgiveness, we will not be condemned, and we will enter your kingdom.

O God, even if we have been forgiven, if we fail to show compassion on those who offended us, what will be done of us? The measure with which we will measure will be used to measure us, so we will have a very sad end. Lord, have mercy on us!

May we have learned this lesson. Why should we fall short of the standards established by you? Why should we fail to praise you, giving opportunity for the devil to act and deceive us, if our happiness and the happiness of others are at stake? Help us, Lord, live in accordance with your Word.
