Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me—for Me? Zechariah 7.5

Fasting is understood by the people of God as a weapon used for divine warfare, and also to cast out evil spirits. However, the biblical purpose for this tool is much wider: it is for God to work on our behalf. We do not have to force the Most High to do anything, for everything that is good and profitable for men to achieve will have His approval. When we enter a period of abstinence, we must defeat our flesh.

If the All-Powerful is not operating, it is our fault. When we fast, we enter a period of self examination. With the help of God we are able to discern what is holding us back from His blessings. Fasting does not only mean to avoid food, but to seek the Bread of Heaven, the revelation of Scriptures that strengthen us so that we can become victorious. 

This practice can help us to suppress our carnal desires, as well as open the path for the Lord to fulfill His promises concerning us. Even when resisting temptation, a little left over could contaminate our heart. When we pray and fast, we can get rid of them.

When we fast to break the spirit of oppression that dominates the life of others and make hurt people succumb to the will of the enemy, the Lord rejoices with us and gives us means to speak the right Word that brings deliverance from darkness. If there are difficulties on using the rights we have in Christ, more then ever, we need a period of prayer and fasting to seek complete deliverance.

However, when the target is not the expansion of the Kingdom and the glory of the Lord, but our self realization, we are not always successful in the search of divine power. But when we first seek the Kingdom and His justice, everything else will be added up. Following the Bible will make every believer a victorious person in the wonderful faith we have in Jesus. How good it is to be in fellowship with the Father!

During many years, the prophets of God insisted for the people of Judah, the reminiscent of the kingdom of David, to turn back to the Most High. However, they did not care about these warnings, so the prophecy was fulfilled and they stayed 70 years in captivity. There are many christians that will spend times of anguish in spiritual slavery, because they chose to disobey the Omniscient. He who does not listen pays a price. And it´s a very high price!

Why do people love the flesh and its unbridled desires, and do not love the Lord? Do not let the devil act. It is easy to stop his actions! Where are those who consecrate themselves for God to fulfill His good will? What have you been doing about it?
