05/10/2014 - DIFFERENCES IN THE KINGDOWM OF HEAVEN

Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5.19

There will be differences in the kingdom of heaven—at least that is what we can understand from this declaration made by the Lord Jesus. However, breaking any of God’s commandments, especially now that we have been warned, is a serious transgression. You can be sure that God would not command us to do anything if it were not very important.

On the other hand, the Bible speaks a lot about reward. Those who do what they are supposed to do will receive a reward. Whoever does not give one of the Teacher’s little disciples a cup of cold water will lose his reward (Matthew 10.42). We must be watchful, so that we do not lose anything that can make us stand out for all eternity.

What we can understand is that reward or loss depends on our actions. I would not want to be among those who are called least if I can be among those called great. Our attitude in relation to God’s commandments and other instructions set forth in his Word will determine the way we will be treated in the Day of rewards. It would be nice if we did not lose any of them.

The truth is that Jesus was not teaching only those who despise the little commandments. He also said that, if we heed to the great commandments, we will be considered great in his eternal kingdom. If you want to receive this treatment, which will last all eternity, pay total attention to the instructions that have been given, specially the great ones.

The best thing to do is to care for everything the Lord says, and then you will not despise any of his orders. Well, if the little commandments are not practiced and taught, you will be considered the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, if you fulfill and teach the big commandments, you will stay among those called great in the kingdom of heaven. I do not need to ask in which group you want to be.

Our attitude in relation to the Lord’s commandments is the proof if we really love him or not. Consequently, try to find out what he wants you to do. If you receive an order to do something great, do not fear, nor pray that he chooses someone else. He who receives a commandment and fulfills it will not lose his reward.

The rich young ruler had already fulfilled almost all commandments, but he was informed that he lacked one thing to enter the kingdom of God. The young man did not like what Jesus said and went away sorrowful (Mark 10.17-23), because he loved his possessions more than the Lord. Do not follow his example (Psalm 62.10; Matthew 6.19,20). Observe all commandments!

In Christ, with love,

Eternal God, thank you for instructing us through your Word. In the world, when we have abundance, we tend to despise that which we consider of little value. When we despise some of your commandments because we consider them little, we only lose.

Thank you for teaching us this truth, because we do not want to spend eternity in the group of those called least. Send us to fulfill wonderful things, so that we may be called great in the kingdom of heaven. We know that you will equip us with all we need to carry out your works.

May all my readers live in a way so that they will not regret having not given attention to your orders. If they faithfully keep your commandments, they will receive eternal reward.
