And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened. 1 Kings 18:27

The 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah were in great despair (v. 19). They did not consider that their god, whom they served, would not help them. However, after many hours crying out and wounding themselves in from of the people, their shame was notable. How many people did they drive away from the true faith, so that they would follow a false god? They expected something bad would happen, but it was already too late.

The man of God faced alone almost a thousand servants of the enemy, and still, he mocked them. They certainly deserved it, because they bowed down to worship Baal, even though they knew the Most High’s testimony that they were in the wrong path. Those prophets preferred to sin rather than to follow the only and saving Truth. Many will recognize their mistake on the Great Day!

Those prophets were always closed to the living God, and they did not hear any answer from Baal. The Lord always warned them that they acted wickedly. However, they were blindly following their faith. Some people do wrong things consciously when they seek other gods. They even feel that they are doing something wicked, but since they desire success, they continue being deceived and deceiving.

Elijah insisted, “Cry aloud!”, and those men got even more desperate. Some were seeing hallucinations, and even though Baal was only an invented idol – something demonic – they kept prophesizing until evening (v. 29). The prophet of the Lord mocked them, telling them that maybe their god was busy, talking to someone else, or on a journey! Then, they saw how ridiculous their ritual was.

Elijah’s mockery served to awaken them, proving them that that false god would never give them any attention. The hours passed, the prophets became more desperate, crying even louder. Baal could do nothing for them; in fact, for anyone at all. There is only one who can solve all problems: Jesus, the Almighty.

Was Baal on a journey? Wasn’t he omnipresent? No! Only the living God is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, and Omniscient. The Most High has power to change the lives of those who believe in Him. He is the only one capable of listening and answering our prayers. The Lord is present in all places at the same time and knows everything about people, both those who seek Him and those who despise Him. To Him belongs all the power!

The true God does not take a nap, but Baal was probably asleep, and only if the prophets cried out loudly, he would wake up. How depressing!  There is nothing better than to believe in the Creator of the Heavens and Earth! He is our Refuge and our Fortress, our help in times of trouble!

In Christ, with love,

God of Elijah! What a difference was seen that day! On one side, the followers of Baal hurting themselves and jumping on the altar, without obtaining any answer. Thus, they proved that their gods were a fraud. On the other side, Prophet Elijah speaking in Your Name.

Lies blind people. Those men believed in Satan’s deception, and though they wounded themselves, their requests were not answered. Believing in You leads man to reason, while believing in what is wrong leads to ruin!

Father, so much ignorance! Even among instructed people, we see so many things that are nonsense! If it is not by Your grace and mercy, it is impossible to wake up any person from the spiritual sleep that came over all on the fall of Adam. Help us!
