Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night. Genesis 31.42

Jacob was furious with his father-in-law’s attitude, and told him about the One who would not allow his oppression. Our faith in God is the greatest help that we can have in our lives, because the Lord defends those who believe in Him, helping them in their moments of need and making them prosper. Therefore, those who make the Almighty their fortress will be victorious in everything, and those who do not fully trust in Him will see that their decision was not wise.

Jacob knew the Lord as the God of Abraham, his grandfather. The faith that the Patriarch of the Hebrews had in the Creator had helped him numerous times. Abraham’s faith, for example, made Pharaoh be rebuked by the Most High for taking Sarah to be his wife. It happened in the same manner when Abimelech, king of Gerar, also tried to do the same with Sarah. He was severely threatened to return her intact. On the contrary, he would be a dead man.

Isaac was forbidden to descend to Egypt, and because of his obedience, he was blessed. It is important that our children – natural or spiritual ones – also learn to respect divine orders. Jacob mentioned Isaac’s fear, showing the respect that his father had for God, which made him trust completely in Him. Because of this attitude, the Omnipotent rebuked Laban on the previous night.

Jacob affirmed that the Almighty had answered his affliction. Now, for 20 years he had served his father-in-law – 14 for his two daughters and 6 for the flock. He had suffered in silence, because he knew that that time came from the Almighty, and was part of his training so that he could present himself before God as an approved servant. Then the day came when the Lord told him that his time of suffering was over and that he should return to his relatives.

When he describes his working conditions during his two decades of service to Laban, Jacob said that he was worn by the heat during the day and by the frost at night. He had little sleep, for his dedication was continuous. This shows that many times, we are drawn towards extreme suffering, to be refined in the fire. If it were not so, we would be lost in other things in this life, and would become worthless to be used by the Lord.

Those who are used by God have some type of history of difficulties. However, nothing is hidden from the Father’s eyes, not even the change in our salary, as it happened with Jacob ten times. Even if there are people that think that they are using us as slaves, it is the Most High that puts us in specific situations as part of our training. This happens so that one day, we may be used to do something greater, for the glory of God.

In Christ, with love,
