See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.” Genesis 19:20

The human heart can only be regenerated by Jesus, through His death in Calvary. Before Christ’s death, it was impossible for it to be transformed. Lot always wanted to take advantage on everything. In the beginning, he followed his uncle, Abraham, and learned how to negotiate with him. Undoubtedly, Lot learned many lessons that made him seek the Lord’s favor and speak about Him. However, he did not have the fear of the Lord.

Abraham’s nephew was obsessed about riches, ease and comfort. He always saw what he thought that others (and specially God) did not see. Poor Lot! He was a good negotiator, but a terrible servant. When we serve the Most High, He takes care of everything concerning our lives. However, when we do not seek Him, He practically cannot do anything for us. Yet, it was only because of Abraham that the Lord sent His angels to save Lot and his family.

Lot was daring enough to offer a solution to an Omniscient and Omnipotent God. The chat that he had with the angel, as he left Sodom, reveals this: he was an expert in negotiation, and after insisting with the heavenly messengers, he was allowed to live in the city that he suggested. However, Lot did not acknowledge that that was just a permission because of his pestering, and not a change in plans of the Most High. As a bad negotiator, he did not know what was to come through that “victory”. Mercy, Lord!

His strategy could be logic, but it did not come from the Holy Spirit. Thus, Lot was unprepared to obey to the Creator’s will and did not instruct his wife to take the divine orientations seriously. He also did not instruct his daughters to choose husbands that were faithful and godly. His daughters were insane, and it became Lot’s shame. The sons that were born to him out of incest were bad testimony.

According to Jesus, man’s logic is carnal and useless. There are many people in church who only wait for an opportunity to sin or to do something wrong that will bring profit or pleasure. They are the stains of the Gospel. Their mistakes lead many to despise the Lord. What is the purpose of having success in this world, if in the spiritual world you may be a reason of a scandal? Woe to the person who is the reason of a scandal.

Lot argued with the messenger from High, saying that he would not live in the mountains. Then, he insisted in showing the small city that he wanted to go to, and argued that he would live well there. He did not treat properly the messenger of the True God. Who was Lot to tell the Most High what to do? However, because of his stubbornness, he received permission to live in that small area. This was the permissive will of God. Then, in that city, his own daughters got pregnant of him. What a shame!

The Bible says that only those who are guided by the Spirit are God’s children. Since Lot’s greed led him to attain authorization to live in that small city, the devil was able to cause the temptation for the incest to happen. Thus, Moab and Ammon were born, and their descendants became two nations that brought harm to Israel. Was Lot´s cleverness worth it?

In Christ, with love,

Father! We sin when we ignore Your orientation, because since we are flesh, we do not have the condition to do what You say. We have walked in darkness, thus, we have stumbled and got hurt. We want to listen to You.

Speak to us, take us by the hand, and lead us away from where we can contaminate ourselves and get lost. What use is there in gaining the entire world and losing our own soul? We beg You: never let us be far away from You!

The person who is always finding excuses and thinks that is wise will never be successful. Even though he may prosper, when the Master returns, he will discover that his choice brought him harm. Therefore, we must follow Your guidance, Lord!
