What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.  I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people.

Psalm 116.12-14

The instructions that God gives us must be regarded as commandments. The psalmist was used by the Lord to tell us this is the way to make the Lord happy and, at the same time, to receive more benefits. You do not need to give material assets as payment, because they were given to you to be enjoyed.

The first thing is to understand what Jesus did for you when he was crucified at the Calvary. Isaiah declared that all our illnesses, pains, inequities and punishment were placed on him and by his wounds we were healed (Isaiah 53.5). Those who have received a benefit must wage a battle against the devil and, with determination, must not let evil take over them.

The word “and” used to connect the sentences in the verse links the obligation to take up the cup of salvation and to call upon the name of the Lord. Everything you can receive from God depends on the latter. This means that you must be watchful in relation to your rights and act as an agent of the Most High – a soldier at service. Do not spend your days complaining to the Lord about your afflictions but demand the solution for all your problems in the name of Jesus.

Psalm 124.8 says clearly that our help is in the name of Jesus. So, instead of crying before the Lord, telling him how much you are suffering, that your spouse does not love you, that you are a miserable person, etc., make the decision to be more than a conqueror (Romans 8.37). Trust in his name and rise up, demanding that everything that does not concern your life and pity leave your life. You can and should do this right now.

Another important instruction is: do not play with the Lord. Imagine that, at a moment of hardship, you notice a wrong situation in your life or that God wanted you to do something, so you made a vow to him. Perhaps you have forgotten what you promised, but God never does. He took note of your decision and now He is waiting for you to keep your promise.

Your “payment” for God’s favor must be made in the presence of the largest number of people possible. When someone orders a service of gratitude for a blessing received from the Lord, how many people will hear that God listens to our prayers and answers them? Lack of gratitude is not tolerated by anyone, not even by the Almighty God.

In Christ, with love,
