And it happened in the fifth year of King Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD. 2Chronicles 12.2

The role model that Rehoboam had from Solomon, his father, in his last days, was not good. The wisest man among mortals knew God’s commandments, but he rebelled. The Lord had said to the Israelites not to intermarry with people from other nations. Despite that, he had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart after other gods. In this sense, Rehoboam should not have his father as a role model.

Rehoboam was not able to see the days of glory of David, his grandfather, because when David died, he was only one year old. But he must have heard about the accomplishments of his grandfather, as well as his love for God’s Word. Rehoboam’s understanding was limited; had he chosen to follow David’s example, he would have been a good ruler. Brethren, let’s not do what Rehoboam did. Let’s make of the accounts recorded in the Scriptures living lessons for us and our family.

Rehoboam’s transgression against the Lord was the reason why God allowed the king of Egypt to come up against Judah. Rehoboam was not expecting that, as no one who falls into transgression expects to pay a high price. Some people regard themselves as special and refuse to observe the laws both of man and God. When they are caught, they are overwhelmed with fear. It is worth remembering that, in the Scriptures, there is no such thing as “negative prescription” for sins.

Shishak, king of Egypt, acted without mercy—he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house (2Chronicles 12.9). Satan does the same. If you fall into his hands, he will take away from your heart—the house of the Lord—the treasures that are stored there. Next thing you know, you don’t remember what your Father has given you, and you don’t believe in him. This evil “king” will take away from your mind all lessons you have learned, and you will be completely lost in times of trouble.

If you have sinned against the Lord, get right with him today. Without seeking forgiveness and completely changing your life, you will be visited by the king of evil. When the “emperor” comes, he will act without mercy: he will take away whatever is good and will leave only bad things. It is definitely not good being in a position where the evil one can easily attack you. So this is the moment for you to make a crucial decision.

Rehoboam was constantly ashamed. Without the gold shields, the captains of his guard had to use bronze shields (2Chronicles 12.10). By seeing that, the heart of the king of Judah was probably torn with shame. Good intentions are worthless after the damage is already done. And there is only one way for you to see good days and enjoy good things: to fear the Lord God. Starting today, do not allow the devil to deceive you—be a servant of God. The Lord protects and blesses those who belong to him (Psalm 121.4).

In Christ, with love,
