And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14.31

We cannot forget that Peter was a man like any other man. The fact that he was chosen to be Jesus’ disciple did not make him any different than what we are. The storm in the sea was brave, and the disciples were terrified to see someone walking over the waters. Jesus calmed them by saying that it was He. But for an instant, without thinking about what he was saying, Peter replied that if it was really the Master, that he would be able to walk over the waters towards Jesus.

There are some things that we ask God without measuring the consequences. Now, if the Lord gives the instructions about something, and if we have faith, we may ask it. But if any other reasoning impels us to ask for divine help, we must avoid making the request. Peter must be praised for his courage to walk over the waters, but at the same time, we must think about the words that Jesus told him, for they sound like a rebuke.

Nobody should dare to do only as they think. However, if the Master says that we may do the same as He does, we must not accept the thought that we will not make it – whether it is walking over the waters or over fire. Whatever the Lord orders us to do has already been made possible by Him. If we do not believe and allow doubt in our hearts, we displease Him, and we may also be rebuked.

The Lord has given mankind the mission to preach the Gospel (Mk 16.15). Thus, we cannot avoid going where He sends us. If we are fulfilling His will, we will be on His hands. No other person had experienced what Peter did when he walked over the waters. However, when he noticed the strength of the wind and felt that he could submerge, he let fear enter his heart and began to sink.

Those who are being guided by the Most High, fulfilling something that He told them to do, should never notice the circumstances surrounding them nor allow fear, doubt, or any other feeling invade their hearts. Or else, the divine hand will be removed from their lives, and as mere humans, they will not be able to accomplish anything. Peter’s attitude made him deserve Jesus’ rebuke.

To please God and be victorious, never retreat in your walk of faith, or else you will be left alone. Obeying what the Lord says is the best way to give Him the glory. Therefore, do not be in a hurry to talk to God. First, listen and meditate, and then when you know what His will is, make your decision. After you are determined to accomplish what the Lord tells you, remain steady and unshakeable, for you will be fulfilling the divine will.

In Christ, with love,
