And Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. Then Jehoram his son reigned in his place.      2 Chronicles 21.1

Jehoshaphat was one of the great kings of Judah, however, since he did not consider obeying the Lord´s advice regarding marriage, he caused his seed not to have same godly assistance that surrounded him. It is necessary to think carefully about all the decisions taken in every aspect, because a sinful act can ruin a life of consecration. This has been happening frequently in our days, despite divine warning.

When he married his son Jehoram with Athalia, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, Jehoshaphat wrote a sad story, which would happen one day. There is no way sin can remain hidden. Many people are playing with God´s patience; however, they must be aware, for their sin will certainly find them. We have to be different from these other people, because if our righteousness does not exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, by no means we will enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Mat 5:20).

Jehoshaphat was given examples by the Most High not to look for those from the house of Israel, for these had revolted against the kingdom established by the Lord, destined to the house of David. However, for reasons we don’t quite understand, this king did not overcome temptation. On Judgment Day, when he discovers what happened to his descendents, he will see that he was responsible for this, and his stubbornness cost a lot of suffering to his people.

Jehoshaphat nearly died in a battle against the Syrians, when they thought he was the wicked Ahab. His life was spared on that occasion because he cried out to the Lord. How many times has the Most High kept you safe? And you still have not decided to live according to the Word? Now, man will reap all that he sows (Gal 6:7). You must know that we are responsible for those that descend from us.

After Ahab´s death, Jehoshaphat continued in disobedience. Although he showed a few times that he feared God, he allowed himself to be led by economic reasons and he made an alliance with Ahaziah, son of the irresponsible Ahab. They set up a maritime company, but the Lord did not allow the project to succeed. May the Lord do the same to all those that deviate from His ways, so that they come back and repent while there is still time.

God sent a prophet to alert the king, by saying that his commercial adventure would not prosper, because the Lord would shatter his works. Soon the ships broke and were not able to go to Tarsus. This proves God´s love for Jehoshaphat, for on other occasions the Lord found good purposes in him. Be careful! Do not provoke the Lord, for if the sentence in Heaven is drawn against your life, there will be no way to prevent your execution.

The last record was that this king died without having undone the company he set up with Ahaziah, which we know, did not prosper. There is no prescription for sin, unless repentance. Therefore, stay alert and see what you are doing and how you will be standing before God on Judgment Day.  My since prayer to the Almighty is that the Lord God may give you repentance!

In Christ, with love,

Zealous God! You always take care of Yours, but when they insist in remaining in their error, there is nothing else You can do for them. This must never be said about us; but only that we respect You and fulfill Your commands.

Why did Jehoshaphat allow his son to marry Athalia if the Word forbid that? As the daughter of Jezebel, she was more of an enemy´s servant used to shame the house of David. However, the king did nor fear You and became involved in problems that almost killed him.

These lessons must be assimilated by those whom You have lifted up to execute Your plan: thus, there will be no more rebels amongst us. We ask for those who are weak in faith and for those who are firm, so that they are strengthened even more.
