The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.

Luke 11:32

Nineveh, capital of Assyria, was apparently difficult to give in before the Lord. It´s inhabitants were barbarians and for that reason, they had no respect for people, much less for the only and true God. However, the anointing that was over Jonah turned them sensible to the voice of the prophet of God. The lesson we learn here is that when God works, no one can stop Him (Isaiah 43:13).

We must not choose where to preach. Prosperous places may be pleasant to those who live on the flesh; beautiful people, nicely dressed and educated are good to those who don’t live in Spirit. However, the man of God must follow the Lord´s instructions and not the calling of the rotten flesh – vultures surely like that. The heart which is guided by the Almighty does not choose the place nor to whom he must minister the Word; the choice must be made by the Lord.

I have observed many times in my ministry that it is much easier to bring to Jesus the greatest sinners than the religious people. These ones hide behind rituals, precepts made up by man and other practices; but those who live in error, when they are placed under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, they become desperate because they know what might happen to them, if, just like the shipwrecked, they don’t grab onto the plank that is thrown to them.

Jonah feared because he let the devil speak negative things. The same thing happens to any person who takes away their eyes from what God declares. The truth is that the Lord would never guide us into doing something that He had not already prepared. Not always does He need martyrs, but in some cases He does need them. When we talk about missions, the devil immediately comes in to try and convince that person who was called that he or she might lose their life in such mission.

All those who are sent by God have the virtue of the Most High upon them. Jonah did not know that, so he ran away, he was swallowed by the big fish and almost lost his life. When he decided to obey the divine order, he realized that the Assyrians were not any different from the rest of the people in the world. The truth is that when God operates, the work is really easy to be accomplished.

It is important not to change the focus point of the message or the way of fulfilling the mission; just follow the Lord´s example and the work will be successfully carried out. After all, the true godsend will always speak according to the Scriptures.

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
