And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

Mark 16:13

After having resurrected, the Lord presented Himself before two disciples who were heading towards the fields on their way to Emmaus. At first they thought it was an ordinary person who accompanied them, but when He made Himself known He vanished. Those men were astonished and said they felt something strange in their heart. They joyfully went after the other apostles and told them what had happened. However, the others did not believe.

What draws our attention here is the fact that the two disciples did not realize that that Man was the Lord. Oftentimes, because we are overwhelmed with disappointments, troubles and sorrows we don’t recognize our God the way He manifests Himself to us.

Amazingly they thought the Lord was an ordinary person and we can also make the same mistake. If we aren’t spiritually connected, His Word – which is one of the means by which He reveals Himself to us – will be regarded as something emotional which “might” give us solace in times of trouble. Therefore, be on the alert because the Bible assures us that God will help in all our distresses (Psalm 46:1).

As soon as they realized it was Jesus, the Lord vanished from their sight. Now, Jesus will not change the method through which He manifests Himself to us. He speaks to our hearts, which burns for His revelation, and then we must act by faith. Do not seek to see the Lord or an angel, and don’t seek some physical manifestation of the Almighty. The correct way is to be conducted by the Holy Spirit who guides us in all truth – God’s Word (John 16:13).

The sign indicating that the Almighty speaks to us is the joy that fills our hearts, like what happened to the disciples, whose hearts burned within them. There are times when the state of commotion that God causes is so great that we think we won’t be able to resist so much joy. In times like these, something inside us makes us understand that the Father is speaking to us, even if we have never had an experience like that before.

They immediately went after the other apostles and told them what had happened. It was the most amazing news they could have had from the Savior: the Master had risen just as He had promised. Consequently, all the divine promises had been fulfilled, the devil was defeated forever and they became owners of the Kingdom of God.

However, even though they had spoken under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, their peers did not give them credit. Make sure your ears are always open because, at any time, the Lord can use someone to bring us His message and if we do not believe in it, we cannot take possession of what is revealed to us. We don’t have to give credit to all blabbermouths we happen to come across, but the true messenger of God conveys divine words.

In Christ with love,
