But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?” So one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.”   2 Kings 3.11

Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, allowed his family to be united with Ahab’s, marrying his son Jehoram with Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. If he had obeyed the Word, his family would not have suffered because of this wedding. Those who are not watchful today may weep bitterly tomorrow. The Lord is not against our happiness, but He cares for His people.

The relationship or society that is not formed according to the divine will can cause many problems. A biblical orientation is that we must watch and pray. This is not to be despised, but assumed as a proof that we love God. Whoever does not respect the Word is opened to the enemy’s operations, which are always very painful. Afterwards, Athaliah, the daughter of Jehoshaphat, killed all her grandsons in order to remain in the throne.

When Joram assumed the kingdom of Israel, after the death of his father Ahab, he did not demonstrate much change. He removed the statue of Baal, but he sinned in the same way as Jeroboam, son of Nebat. He should have paid attention to the sins of the previous kings and brought the people back to serve the true God. Whoever converts to the Lord must do so with all of his heart, and should not serve the devil any longer in any of his deceptions.

Joram saw the Moabites rebel against his kingdom, so he asked Jehoshaphat to fight besides him against Mesa, the king of the Moabites. Promptly, the king of Judah decided to help him. Then, after they walked without any water for seven days, Joram blamed God, saying that Jehoshaphat and the King of Edom had been driven to that situation by His hand. However, he was wrong.

When they saw themselves in trouble, Jehoshaphat asked if there was not a prophet in that place to seek for the Lord. As an answer, he heard that there was one person whose mission was to pour water in Elijah’s hands. When Jehoshaphat heard this, he knew that this man had the Word of the Lord. For Joram, Elisha was nobody important. But for Jehoshaphat, since Elisha was in that mission, he had the Word of the Most High with him

Since Elisha served Elijah with humility, Jehoshaphat considered that he was a man of God. He had proved himself a good student in the school of the Lord’s Spirit. Never go against the direction of the divine work, because whenever you do something humble, that will bring you future blessings.

Whoever is working in God’s mission must not refuse to do whatever comes to him, whether it is something small or very important. God has his own way to test you and lead you to learn with those who are in the right direction. Thus, when the right time comes, you will have the conditions to fulfill what He has prepared for you.

In Christ, with love,

God! We should always consult you, so that we may not make decisions that will bring us harm. The marriage of Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, and Athaliah shows how a bad decision can bring pain and sorrow for so many.

They were in a desperate situation. Joram, king of Israel, did not even imagine that near him was the solution for this and all other problems. However, as he attended Jehoshaphat’s request, he saw how You are good, compassionate, and merciful.

How many lessons learnt! One of the most important ones is that it does not matter what is our mission. If it comes from You, we must be willing to learn and do Your will. Help us to understand how much we depend on You. Amen!
