Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and irons. Because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the Most High, therefore He brought down their heart with labor; they fell down, and there was none to help. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their chains in pieces.

Psalm 107:10-14

He who rebels against the Word of God and despises the counsel of the Most High makes a grave mistake. There is no plausible explanation for such an action, unless whoever does so has been carried away by the lies of Satan. The suffering that person will go through will be exceedingly great; after all, by being far from the divine protection, he or she will be in an open field for the attacks of the evil one. However, if they have sound judgment, the will come running back with sincere repentance.

In the darkness, where the Lord’s light does not shine, sits the rebel – the one who dwells in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and irons. On the spiritual side, he will feel nothing but pain; in his material life he will be bound in irons and will not be able to free himself. Because he is out of God’s protection the evil spirits enslave him.

The heart of the rebel is brought down with labor and worries. That means he knows no peace, and even if there is any blessing upon his life, his spiritual state of mind does not allow him to enjoy the good things. Life becomes dull, joyless, and therefore he cannot find pleasure in what he does. Poor life! He would not be going through this if only he respected the Lord.

He who lives apart from God is always falling down. No matter how hard he strives, he will not succeed. Inexplicably, whatever he manages to obtain ends up going down the drain. He fails not only in his professional life but also in his family, finances and even his health gets frail. Such person is unlucky because he is a prisoner of death.

Rebels have a lot to lose because even if the holiest servant of God prays for them, they will not obtain anything. Failure to comply with the commandments annuls the faith of those who are willing to help; doctors cannot heal their disease and lawyers grow tired of acting on their behalf.

However, if the rebel is willing to call upon the Lord, He will answer him. No matter how far this person is, if only he acknowledges the sorrowful state he finds himself in and cries out, the merciful God will get into action and will deliver him completely. There are no limits for the lost to repent and attain the divine favor.

The Most High expects the rebellious to abandon their madness and cry out to Him. Then the Lord will take action and will get them out of darkness and the shadow of death and will break their chains in pieces, even if they are made of iron. When God works, nobody can reverse it (Isaiah 43:13).

In Christ with love,
