18/02/2015 - THEIR MISTAKE WAS TO HARDEN THEIR HEARTS

Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, as in the day of trial in the wilderness.  Psalm 95.8

The Lord is talking about two events. We will comment about what happened in Meribah, when the people of God grumbled due to the lack of water. When Moses heard them complaining once again, he lost his self-control, and struck the rock twice. He had not listened carefully to what the Lord had ordered – to speak to the rock – and acted on his own business (Nm 20.2-13).

What we learn from Moses, considered as the meekest man on earth, is very meaningful (Nm 12.3). Even people who are self-confident and assured, if led to a very great stress, might lose their patience and act out of control. Therefore, we must always keep our calm and never do what we were not told to do. An apparently simple act can bring harmful consequences.

There were two moments in which the Lord ordered to take out water from the rock. On the first one, Moses had to strike the rock, from where water would come (Ex 17.5,6). On the second time, the orientation was that he should speak to the rock (Nm 20.8). Always pay attention to what is spoken to you, for because of a simple distraction, you may commit a huge mistake that will hurt someone, God’s plan, or even yourself. Now, the most High would never tell you to do something that was not part of His will.

Jesus was the Rock that guided the people of Israel. He could only be struck once, and as Moses did not observe what he had been ordered to do, he struck the rock twice, and thus, lost the right of introducing the children of Israel into the Promised Land. Any act that is outside of the Lord’s order is of full responsibility of he who does it. Even worse: if we do what was not authorized by the Most High, we will suffer the punishment.

Notice that God did not change His position. Moses worked a lot to take the Israelites out of Egypt and make them pass through the Red Sea. After guiding them for 40 years through the desert, when the time came to cross the Jordan, Moses was killed by God Himself. His distraction in fulfilling the Lord’s orders made him lose the privilege of leading the congregation to the promised place.

Never leave the limits of the revelation and always pay attention to the Lord’s orientations. Do not create a doctrine to achieve someone’s approval or to fill the church and dominate the people (Gl 1.10). There is no need that justifies a bad action. Stay inside the boundaries of what is written in Scriptures so you will not be disqualified. It does not matter how long you faithfully serve God. If you transgress, your action will bring you a consequence.

The Almighty never changes (Jm 1.17). Whoever trespasses the doctrine of Christ will not have Him as his God anymore. Everyone who is corrupted does not have the Father nor the Son. The recommendation is for us to be faithful until death, because then, we will receive the crown of life (Rv 2.10). The faithful escapes from all condemnation (Rm 8.1).

In Christ, with love,

Absolute Lord! Looking from the human side, we pity Moses. He worked for 40 years to guide Your people to the Promised Land, and since he was not watchful, he let himself be led by his anger and was disqualified to complete the mission.

This serves as a lesson for us not to allow the enemy deceive us and drive us away from Your presence and our calling. We must observe the Scriptures and the commandments so that we are not rejected for what our corrupt heart unfortunately enjoys.

The mistake of the Israelites was to harden their hearts. May we be always ready to change our direction every time that Your Spirit touches us. Help us to understand fully Your order so that we may not fall in the traps of the enemy. Lord! Help us always.
