He was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reigned in Jerusalem eight years and, to no one’s sorrow, departed. However they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. 2 Chronicles 21.20

Jehoram – the person who the verse is referring to – was the son of a man who knew how to serve the Lord. However, as he became king, he did not learn the same virtue of his father. The same thing happens to many people who are not able to follow in the path of happiness according to the good example of their natural or spiritual father, who are true men of God, and give themselves to sin. Those who prefer sin will discover that their choice will lead them to eternal perdition, and while they are still around here, they will be without the divine protection.

Do not waste the time of your reign, for if you do so, the Lord will not confirm your reign, and you will have all kinds of problems. Those who are not behaving as sovereign people in all areas of life must verify if they are giving themselves to impiety. It is useless to scream against evil, declare yourself saved and live praising God, or even preaching the Gospel, if you let the devil make his nest in any part of your life.

Apart from the mission that is given to you in the divine work, you have been made a king in everything that concerns you (Rv 5.10). God made you sovereign so that you would accomplish His orders with honor. It is up to you to prepare yourself to accomplish masterfully whatever is determined to you. It is not good to bury your talent, or to be negligent, making the work carelessly, for if you are found wanting, the price that you will pay will be very high.

Besides being a bad king, Jehoram also killed all his brothers. In this case, the mistake might have originated in Jehoshaphat, who allowed or authorized the marriage of his first born with the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, who were servants of the devil. Therefore, both his murderer son and the people of Judah would pay a high price for having such a person leading the nation. Bad choices give the evil one a great space to operate.

It is always necessary to seek for heavenly guidance. As we have seen concerning the wedding of Jehoram and the daughter of the kings of Israel, a badly taken decision can bring great and lasting suffering for many people. However, those who have the orientation of the Holy Spirit and follow it never give the enemy any opportunity to use them. Certainly, Jehoshaphat would have opposed the union of his family with the king of Israel if he knew that that would end badly.

Apparently, Jehoshaphat was a father that cared about his children, because before he died, he gave them gold, silver, and other very precious things. Normally, this is what the unbelieving parents do. However, the greatest inheritance that we can leave for our children is the fear of the Lord, but he was not careful to transmit it to them.

Jehoram walked in the evil ways of the kings from the kingdom of the North, called Israel. He encouraged the practice of witchcraft in Judah, which attracted the divine wrath. When he died, it was to no one’s sorrow. It will be the same for the person who does not serve the Lord, for people will feel relieved with his departure. Now, in what state will this person get to the eternal Judgment?

In Christ, with love,

Holy God! We want Your help so that we are not used by the devil to do what is evil according to Your eyes. Jehoshaphat did not watch, did not seek Your direction for the important issues in life, and therefore, he led his son to be part of Ahab’s family.

Why did Jehoshaphat, who feared You, not watch or see that Jehoram was not committed to You? What is the value of the riches left to the other children if the firstborn and favorite son killed them all? If he had had Your direction, this would never had happened.

We do not know what is in the heart of man, not even in our own children. We will only avoid any type of problem teaching them in Your fear. If we teach them in the way that they should walk, they will be successful and will never serve the devil. Thank You for this lesson!
