Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.

Acts 8.5

No one will be a minister of the New Testament without going through the new birth, which includes forgiveness of sins, the water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Philip went through each stage until he got to the position of minister of the gospel. We must follow the same path. After all, if the work is not done in a complete manner, it will not be accepted by the Lord (and those who make up other means will be disappointed at the last day).

Everyone should strive to present themselves approved to God (2Timothy 2.15). He who is saved knows he was touched by God, therefore he made the decision to surrender his life to Jesus. Then he was baptized in water and sealed with the Holy Spirit. Despite having been through all these stages, the temptation remains there, and he who wants to please the Lord (and not fall into temptation) must continuously seek his presence.

When all Christians, except the apostles, were scattered from Jerusalem due to the persecution, Philip felt that he should go down to the city of Samaria to help people experience the same things he had experienced. He believed that what had happened to him was a divine treatment that better prepared him to serve the Lord. So, with honesty and wisdom, he addressed the Samaritans and preached the gospel to them.

Philip, as a faithful servant of God, wanted those people to find the solution for their problems. And every Christian should act in the same manner towards those who are lost. Those who do nothing for the brokenhearted live in selfishness, without caring about those who were not born again. But those who are truly saved know that the preaching of the gospel is the work that pleases our Father the most.

When Philip announced the good news, people received real faith in the Son of God, and were delivered from demons. Now that the Samaritans became children of the Lord, the devil could no longer oppress them. They were no longer slaves to sin and could enjoy God’s blessings. As a result, the crippled, the blind, and all those who were suffering were delivered from problems that seemed unsolvable. That is the gospel in action.

The secret was to speak to the Samaritans about the matters related to the kingdom of God. Jesus said that, when the kingdom of his Father comes, the delivery of those who are possessed by demons is automatic, because all evil is cast out. Philip knew that an unserious talk would never deliver anyone from the forces of darkness. That is why he spoke about the glorious name of Jesus, where our help is (Psalm 124.8). Work completed, success guaranteed!

The purpose of the preaching of the gospel remains unchanged. We must not allow to be fooled by people who claim to be “enlightened”, for whom the correct manner to do the work of God today is different from the one in the past. This is plain foolishness. After all, we were commanded to teach the same things the Lord taught. Anything different comes from the devil.

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
