06/25/2012 - Rio+20: what sustains the sustainability?

André Soares

In June 2012, Brazil hosted the most important event of the decade on sustainability: the Rio+20. As a State Representative, I participated in this conference actively, which is an initiative of the United Nations Organizations (UNO) and what I highlight as the key point of the discussions is that sustainability must be understood in a global way.

Sustainable growth goes far beyond mere environmental issues. A green economy must be supported by pillars that comprise cultures, peoples, human beings. More than thinking about reforestation, it is necessary to develop ways to eradicate hunger in African countries or enforce labor rights in Asia, for example.
Sustainability is, in my opinion, to reach a level of development that includes and respects life as a whole.
