09/25/2012 - We should pray for our authorities – Part 2

André Soares

In the first part of this text I talked about the need for the nation of Israel to have a king and how Saul was elected. However, there is something important to note in this story: Before being proclaimed king, Saul was secretly anointed by Samuel (I Samuel 10) and before he was elected, God had changed his heart and had come upon him (I Samuel 10:9-10).
We can derive a lesson from that: even though that people stubbornly rejected God’s leadership, the Lord mercifully continued guiding that nation. The authority He constituted bowed to do His will and exert good government in Israel.
There is still one last piece of advice that the prophet Samuel gave when he hailed Saul’s reign during his farewell speech: “14If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the LORD your God. 25 But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
It shows that the beginning of a blessed government is when the people fear the Lord and kneels before Him for the nation’s sake.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD! (Psalm 33:12a)

God bless you!
