14/06/2018 - THE VALUE OF PERSEVERANCE

Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings 2:11

Always before doing anything, God talks about it with His servants. When He was about to take Elijah to heaven before he died, the Lord told Elisha – Elijah’s assistant – and the other disciples of the prophets. It would be good if those who serve God with us today would be informed of what the Most High is about to do. If it were so, we would not be surprised.

Elijah, the Tishbite, was in Gilgal, and before he left, he told Elisha to remain in that place. However, since he knew what was about to happen, he continued next to his master (2 Kings 2:2). It is wonderful to be in communion with God, for He reveals what will happen. There are cases in which just a prayer solves, bur there are others in which we must watch and see the Lord act. Elisha knew how to feel and watch!

In the place where Jacob met with God and had his heart changed, the disciples of the prophets told Elisha of the divine plan. He said that he already knew it and told them to be silent about it (v. 3). In Bethel, Elijah fulfilled his task and ordered his assistant to stay there, for he had to go to Jericho (v. 4). Again, Elisha, knowing that his future depended on his perseverance, guaranteed that he would not let his master go alone. It is good to listen to the Most High and obey Him with faith.

When they got to Jericho, the disciples from that city went to Elisha and informed him that the prophet would be raptured that day. He answered that he knew it already and told them to say nothing about it (v. 5). If he took his eyes away from his master, he would lose a great opportunity. Believers must live in the same way. If the Lord does something while you are inattentive, you will lose the moment of being blessed. The secret is to persevere in what the Father has said, without fainting!

In Jericho, Elijah said the same thing as before: that God sent him on to the Jordan, but that Elisha had to remain there (v. 6). Another time, Elijah’s disciple showed that he was perseverant, saying that he would follow him there as well. Then, Elijah saw that he had the qualities to succeed him. Be faithful to the Lord and never give up on your calling. If you pass the tests you prove that you are His servant and can be used as such.

In the banks of the Jordan River, the prophet took his mantle, and as if it were his last lesson, he rolled it up and struck the water, which was divided, and they crossed over on dry ground. Then, he told Elisha to ask whatever he wanted. The young prophet asked for a double portion of the anointing of his master, who declared: “you have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so” (v. 10). Pay attention to God’s conditions!

Then, a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, separating the two of them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven (v. 11). Elisha tore his clothes into two and took the mantle of Elijah. Then he crossed the Jordan back on dry land (v. 12,13). Our God is tremendous!

In Christ, with love,

Lord of chariots and horses of fire! We praise You for what You have done in the rapture of Elijah. You gave Elisha the double portion of that prophet, confirming to us that those who believe can do the same and even greater works than Jesus did.

Since Elisha was perseverant, he obtained what he wanted to serve in Your work. Our desire is also to be used as You wish, being an example for future generations. We must serve You!

If we have received the Holy Spirit unlimitedly, why don’t we surrender more to You? May we learn to do Your will! Thus, we will allow all who come a chance of loving You. Amen!
