Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” Luke 23:39

Many voices call us to practice their desires, speak what is undeserving or do what is forbidden.  The choice belongs to each, according to their fear of the Lord. The devil can tempt you by filthy dishonest ways and make you feel different and more powerful that anybody else.  However, if you are God’s you will not allow yourself to be lead into temptation whatsoever.  You only become a sinner if you lay hold of it, no matter what the sin is.

When Jesus died, we saw how the devil tempted people, but many were assisted by the Spirit of God.  If we respond in obedience to the heavenly signal, we will never fall into temptation.  We know that to be tempted is not a sign of sin, but it becomes sin the moment we accept the temptation.  The princes of Israel could have altered their eternal destiny before Jesus at the cross, but they listened to the devil as they defied the Savior.  Their ruin was the outcome.

When they took Christ to Calvary to be crucified, there were also two robbers.  Arriving at the place of the Skull, Jesus was crucified together with them.  As he was being nailed to the tree, the Lord prayed: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do (Luke 23:34), referring to those that were there.  On hearing this, the other two could be saved or not.  All depended on their attitude.

As it always happens, the multitudes only looked on, but the Israelite princes were mocking Jesus, saying that He had saved others, but could not save Himself. The devil tempted them in order to lead Christ to do something to prove who He was.  The Roman soldier would imitate and mock Him. Besides, they offered Him vinegar, saying If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself (v.37). The wicked repeat what the enemy wants, for they are the spokesmen for the devil.

At that hour, when the Savior was agonizing at the cross, the Spirit of God was at work in the hearts.  One of the malefactors chose to join the mockers saying If you are the Christ, save yourself and us (v. 39).The prayers of debauchery, and of the incredulity, which are not in response to what God says to the heart of who pray, are not answered.  All discern and understand if the source is His and if they have a good heart, they will lay hold of it.

The other malefactor accepted the divine touch and rebuked his companion in error: “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?” (v. 40). The repentant thief confessed that they deserved what they got, but Jesus had done nothing (V.41).  This man not only recognized Who Jesus was, but also prayed with sincerity, asking Him to remember him when in the Kingdom of God (v. 42). Certainly he knew the Word, but at some moment in his life, he had given ears to the devil and given in to sin, but at that moment he was asking for salvation.

This proved that the Lord is sensitive to listening to a plea for mercy asked by someone sincere. This was all that Jesus needed to save one more lost sinner during His last hour on Earth.  Christ said that that man would be in Paradise with Him that same day (v.43). The Father had heard the Son’s plea: that He forgive those who did Him harm for they knew not what they did.

In Christ, with Love,

Merciful Father! Even during the unrest that overtook Jerusalem, You acted with wisdom and took one more to salvation.  Your Son’s prayer was heard and forgiveness then was extended towards all. We do not know how many received and embraced Your forgiveness afterwards.

Poor princes of Israel, that preferred to hear what was said about Jesus than to accept Your testimony.  So did the soldiers.  However, we believe that many came to You on that day, confessing their sins and receiving salvation.  You are faithful and forgiver!

Poor robber who preferred to join the wicked and died without Your forgiveness.  Certainly this saddened You.  Look to my readers who know You in Truth, but do not follow You.  I desire that all may be converted and saved.  Amen!
