Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.

Jeremiah 1.5

A human being is much more than the fruit of a relationship between a man and a woman. He is part of God’s plan and approval, who has made him complete—all he needs to do is to go through a new birth in Christ. When this happens, he acquires conditions to assume the mission entrusted to him by the Creator, which is the work for which God has formed him. The Lord is so perfect in what he does! What we need to do is get rid of our fallen condition due to Adam’s sin.

In this verse, God is saying to Jeremiah that it was he who formed the prophet. The spirit of man—his actual being—was formed by the Lord. The Lord also says that, before he formed us, he knew us. This means that he designed us and saw that we would come out exactly the way he had planned. So he went ahead and created us in his image. That is so awesome!

The seed that originates a person is given by the father and then it develops in the womb of the mother. On the other hand, God said: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Here the Lord is talking about our actual being: the spirit. It does not matter if the act that forms a new person takes place in or out of wedlock. He who does it in a wrong manner will render accounts to the Lord of his sinful acts. The difference lies in the fact that that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (John 3.6).

When the sperm meets the egg, a new life begins. In a fraction of a second, the Lord forms our spirit, with all capacity to fulfill his plan. We certainly do not have all information about this process, but the most important thing we must know is that God is present even before our lives begin—our lives stem from him.

Onan, one of Judah’s sons, married his brother’s wife, in accordance with the law. His brother Er had been killed by the Lord because he was wicked (Genesis 38.7). But whenever Onan slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also (v. 9,10). What about couples who do not want to have children? This is an important issue to be considered, because children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127.3).

Doctors who do abortions should also consider that. God creates life in the mother’s womb, but sometimes before the baby is born doctors, who believe to be entitled to intervene in God’s plan, kill it. On Judgment Day, when we will come before the Lord and render accounts of all our acts, what will happen to the legislators who passed pro-choice laws or judges who authorized abortions?

In Christ, with love,
