07/09/2011 - A CURSE ON OUR BEHALF

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”, that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:13-14

Because of man’s sin the Most High gave us His Law and those who did not fulfil everything that was written in it would bear the consequences and be punished (Deuteronomy 28:15). Yet, with the coming of the Son of God many works were done on our behalf, among them, salvation: the deliverance from the curse of the Law, which is the most important of all the blessings bestowed by the Lord on our lives. Understanding what He accomplished with this gesture can spare us from many of our daily tribulations.
For mankind to be free from the curse of the Law once and for all, Christ had to become a curse for us. That was not an easy choice; as a matter of fact He begged the Father to let that cup pass from Him if possible (Matthew 26:39), but Christ had to drink from it. That was pretty strong: He became a curse in our place and thus He fulfilled the requirement of that Law to take from us such a heavy and painful burden. Today, the children of God must be aware that they are exempted forever from paying such an expensive price and that the best way to be thankful for such gift is by living the freedom that He gave to us.
What is written will never be changed or cancelled; on the contrary, it has to be fulfilled. So we can give glory to God because the work has already been done. “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me” – He asked, but there was no other means for that project to be carried out. I think our fate was hanging by a singed string. Had Jesus refused to suffer on our behalf, we would have been lost forever. But He was firm and finished the divine plan completely.
Christ became a curse because it is written that all those who were hung on a tree would be cursed. The pain was intense and gruesome, but the love of our Savior prevailed and He bought us for God by taking us out
of the enemy’s claws and conveying us into His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13). Now, we belong to the Lord and we are safe from Satan’s operations. For that reason we don’t near to fear any attack from hell; after all, no weapon formed by the devil against our lives shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).
The reason why Jesus delivered us from the curse of the Law was for the blessing of Abraham to come upon the gentiles through Christ. But, unfortunately, many Christians do not understand that and as a result they go on living their lives without that gift. Now, those who belong to the Lord have the obligation to learn the meaning of the blessing of Abraham and claim it because failing to enjoy what God promised to that patriarch is not only an expression of contempt towards the gift we received, but also an offence to the Lord. It would be tantamount to declaring that He deserved that punishment.
Apart from the blessings of Abraham, the fact that Christ became a curse was for us to receive the promise of the Holy Spirit. But mind you: it happens by faith. This is something we must pay heed to because the Holy Spirit was given to us with the purpose of performing in and through us the same things He did in Jesus and through His ministry. The coming of the Holy Spirit in our lives was to rescue us from all devilish actions and to grant us might to accomplish our mission.
In Christ, with love,
R. R. Soares
