In this Psalm, David was very sad regarding those who allowed themselves to be used by the devil – and the friend who he went to worship with, arose to attack him (Psalm 55.13,14). Things happen in our lives almost without any explanation, but fortunately the Holy Spirit keeps us from making statements that will complicate us on Judgment Day. It´s good to surrender matters into God’s hands, so that we are not responsible for someone’s eternal loss (1 Peter 2.23). Caution!
David said that the Lord would hear the slanders spoken about him; the king believed that those who lied about him, imputing improper acts to him, would be judged by God. Every servant of the Most High must have this understanding, for He said: Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm (Psalm 105.15). The Lord will avenge them!
After hearing what they have spoken or done against us, the Almighty will judge these people, and they will get the just reward for their deeds. The Lord said: By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me (John 5.30). The judgment executed by God is perfect, pure and holy!
The Omniscient One does not hear as we hear. He knows the motives of the heart of the one who has harmed another person (Proverbs 16.2). Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, tried to deceive the Holy Spirit, who was using Peter to build up the Church – and they were struck dead in front of the apostle and the people in the service. First, it was Ananias; almost three hours later, Sapphira confirmed the lie and received the same sentence (Acts 5.1-11).
The Lord has presided since ancient times, and He is certainly tired of seeing people lying. But God doesn’t need anyone’s testimony to know the truth – He has the ability to see all things as they really are: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to Whom we must give account (Hebrews 4.13). Lying displeases God!
David thought that the wicked and the adversary were destroying his reputation and his past as a man of God, but he discovered that it was not an enemy but – his fellow believer. This one, no doubt, had sold himself to the devil to destroy him; poor fellow! He felt remorse, but was a coward to confess, rejecting the work that the Spirit of God was doing in his heart. Thus, there was no change or fear.
The sentence came out of the prophetic word: the opponents would be afflicted for having stretched out their hands against the one who had peace with them (v. 15). Whoever breaks the Covenant, acts against the Lord´s commandments, becoming a defendant of the divine order. Now, to enter Heaven, one must be faithful. Whoever fails to keep his promises will not enter the Glory of God!

God, our Defender! Our actions before You, striving for the good of Your work, are recorded in Heaven. A covenant between two people cannot be broken by anything, for the one responsible for the rupture will get involved in eternal trouble. You are just!
We cannot use shady means to suceed in life, hindering the path of Your elect, to achieve the ends that You have not assigned to us. After all, they are reserved for other people. Mercy!
Help us to hear Your voice, and grant us the ability to turn from error and make the necessary change. May we never rejoice in anyone's misfortune, but with love - may we forgive the one who has transgressed!
