All nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me; but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. They surrounded me like bees; they were quenched like a fire of thorns; for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

Psalm 118:10-12

In this passage, the Psalmist speaks of his wars and how he fought them. Each one of God’s children upon the face of earth also undergoes trials and the enemy always expects to overcome them. A proof of this is that he does not give up persecuting them even if they have already won several battles.

As a matter of fact, if we are not firm on the Rock, Satan will come when least expected – when the situation is apparently calm – in order to hit us with one of his deadly blows. However, if we believe that we can do all things through the Name of Jesus (Philippians 4:13) and remain steadfast in the Word of God, the devil will be destroyed.

No matter if you are surrounded by an evil force, a legion of demons or all the hosts of hell: if you put your faith in what the Lord says about your position in Him, you will be victorious (Ephesians 1:20-21; 2.6). So never say that the burden is heavy, that you cannot stand it any more, and that from now on you will not do anything, because such statements are exactly what the devil wants to hear from your mouth. The enemy does everything for you to confess that you are about to give up because if you do so, he will defeat you.

The psalmist says that the struggle was continuous. Those nations recomposed and returned to surround the man of God, but in the name of the Lord, he destroyed them. Our enemy does the same with all the children of our heavenly Father: though defeated, the evil one is not ashamed of rising and putting up a fight in order to try to destroy us. So what we have to do is use the name of Jesus and oust the devil. Satan acted that way with Jesus, but after three failed attempts he went away (Matthew 4:1-11). Wise up and destroy the enemy whenever he tempts you!

Finally, those nations that seemed a swarm of bees became like the fire of thorns – which lasts only for a moment – and were extinguished. This happened because the psalmist used the name of the Lord to destroy them. Likewise, you must be firm and prevent the evil one from having the pleasure of saying that he defeated you. In the Name of Jesus, he will be destroyed!

The Psalmist credited everything he did to the name of the Lord. Undeterred – and without complaining or saying he did not understand why the Almighty did not rid him of the enemy once and for all – that servant of the Most High would always go against Satan in the Name of the Lord and ended up victorious. This should be the procedure of those who belong to God in order to overcome the temptations that insist on oppressing them. Be firm, because your victory lies in using the name of Jesus!

In Christ with love,
