“And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.” (Nehemiah 5:6)
We have to consider ourselves members of the same family: the family of God. After all Jesus said that His mother and His brothers are those who do the will of the Father (Matthew 12:48–50). The Bible states that we are members of the same Body (Romans 12:5); therefore we are one in the body of Christ. So, humiliating people is not right because if we do so, the Head of this Body, which is Christ Himself, might be enraged at us.
Nehemiah was very angry as he heard that the Jews were enslaving some of his brothers. Well, Jesus does not like to see anyone pulling the rug from under someone else’s feet or being dishonest to them, defiling their homes or failing to give them the respect they deserve. We must respect everybody including those who are members of the Body of the Lord because they are also heirs of the same inheritance we share and they have access to the same Spirit that we have been granted.
All those who work in the divine work are servants of the Lord and the righteous Judge would undoubtedly not like to see one of His children being oppressed, mocked or robbed. It is good not to let the Lord get angry for something that might cause harm of any kind to any of His little ones. On the other hand, whoever gives one of His little ones something to drink in the name of His disciples – even if it is just a glass of fresh water – will not lose their reward (Matthew 10:42); as a matter of fact, they will get a prize from God Himself on the day of reckoning. But will the Almighty One, on that day, forget any suffering that any of His beloved children might have gone through?
There is nothing left to fear when we have the Most High executing our judgement because He is perfect and all-seeing. Even men’s intentions do not escape His sight. Therefore the Lord will not let Himself be deceived by lies that some will say to try to confuse Him. When He puts His eyes – which are like flames of fire (Revelation
19:12) – on those who bother His servants they will confess all the transgressions they have committed to cheat or denigrate someone’s image.
God rejoices over our inner truth. It pleases Him when, for instance, we are obedient to His Word and release forgiveness to those who have betrayed us, those who have hurt our feelings or have caused us any harm and He will reward His children according to what they did regarding His Word.
My brethren, the truth is that we need to resist the temptation of owning more and more. The enemy will try to lure you into behaving dishonestly, into telling lies and doing a bunch of other wrong things in order for you to depart from the divine presence, but do not let yourself be carried away by such practices. Be strong, firm and true. If you have wronged someone you must go up to that person and make amends with him or her, and if someone has done you wrong, forgive him or her. Make the Eternal King joyful and happy over you!
In Christ, with love,
R. R. Soares
