Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Psalm 77:9

When there is no apparent reason for our problems, we usually think that God is responsible for them. However, since we respect Him, we rather say that He has forgotten to have mercy on us. Actually, we should never sin or let any sinful thoughts dwell within us, because this hurts the Lord´s holiness. We have a solution for the transgression in our hands: confess it to God (1 John 1:9). However, we do not always remember this.

You can’t forget a pain in any part of the body, especially if it´s in the heart. For God, any sin before His eyes is worse than the pain that makes us shudder. Therefore, we can never allow any mistake in our lives, because it will separate us from the Most High (Isaiah 59:1,2). If we sin, we must tell our heavenly Father, so that forgiveness will be granted to us and the stain on us will be completely removed.

As for God forgetting to be merciful, it was a thought that helped the psalmist recover his memory, but this must never happen again. God is so great that He knows the names of the 100 billion stars that make up our galaxy, the Milky Way (Isaiah 40:26). He also knows the stars, their measurements and the exact location of the other 100 billion galaxies that exist in the universe, according to scientists. Simply put, He is God!

We have taken little notice of the meaning of divine mercy. So says the Bible: Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. (Lamentations 3:22). What a comfort to know the truth about these operations of God! They, which are the reason why we are not consumed, have no end and are renewed every morning (v. 23). The Lord is tremendous, isn’t He?

We need to fear God’s wrath and not provoke Him to it, because after all, the loss will be only ours. The children of Israel believed the report of 10 of the 12 spies who spent 40 days in Canaan, examining the Promised Land. For having given the bad news and not glorifying the Lord by telling what Canaan was like and for having inflamed the people to want to go back to Egypt, the ten would have died if Moses hadn’t interceded on their behalf (Numbers 14:1-20). Believe!

Asaph thought that God might have ended His mercies in His anger against him, because He did not answer his pleas for freedom. The same way acts the one who cynically denies his sin. Now, he who does this before God may die for lying, just as it happened to the couple Ananias and Sapphira. They deceived about the value of the sale of their property, even though they felt, by the Holy Spirit, that they should speak the truth (read Acts, chapter 5).

The psalmist was bad with God, unaware of the cause for not having his prayers answered. In his weakness, he began to question, “Has the Most High forgotten to have mercy on me, or has He ended His mercies because of His anger?” Neither one of the other. Asaph soon learned what had actually occurred and speaks about it in the next verse. Pray!

In Christ, with love,

Merciful Father, who loves His children! Without philosophizing, we ask for Your help to walk with our heads held high before You. Neither speaking nor judging, but praying - are the best attitudes we should have, when we don't understand the situations.

We are weak and dependent on You for everything. You chose us and sent us to do Your will. You knew us, but Your love was so great that You forgave us and gave us the glory of being called Your children. You are so kind!

Cover us with Your mercies and raise us up to walk before You. On our own we are not able to draw near to You. Your love is highly desired. We beg for forgiveness and the opportunity to live by Your side!
