The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hachaliah: It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the citadel” (Nehemiah 1:1)
The servants of God work according to the Word even when they’re busy with their secular affairs. That’s what happened to Nehemiah, king Artaxerxes’ cupbearer. He wasn’t reckless with his commitment with the Lord though he was in a strange land with a good job. And we must follow suit: under any circumstances we must always be in communion with the Most High, the One who’s sovereign over everything and everybody.
My brethren, nothing is lost; all divine plans will be fulfilled, even those meant for your life. So, though apparently there’s no way out, you should never fail to believe in the Almighty God; after all, nobody can hinder Him whenever He’s operating.
As we read the verses that follow the above passage about Nehemiah, we can see that the Lord used the visit Hanani and his friends paid to Nehemiah in order to make him understand his calling for a glorious mission. The reports he received about Jerusalem and its inhabitants were enough for the Spirit of God to touch his heart. And when he heard of the dreadful state the Holy Land was in, he wept and mourned. Strange as it may seem, in the midst of chaos and suffering, our God can make many people understand that it’s time to obey the “Go and preach the Gospel” command and to offer themselves to do His work.
Those who believe do speak out. So, I ask you now, my dear reader: what about your words? What have you been saying in your prayers? What about the answer you’ve been giving to the Spirit of God? What have they been like? Don’t go mute, because the Lord has appointed you to do something in His Name regardless of your career, gender, age, material assets or culture; the Most High always knows what He does.
In order for us to successfully accomplish our calling, we must pray. The One who’s calling us is surely wise and we’ll be successful if we listen to His guidance. We should not imitate those who did the will of God before
us because they lived in another period of time and what they did was effective for their contemporary fellows. The plan of God for Moses was specific for him; the one for David was specifically designed for him; the one for Paul was also different and so is the one for myself and for you.
Nehemiah prayed and God gave him wisdom to get the royal permission. The same happens to those who are under the guidance of the Heavens. Never mind what people say, whether they’re religious or not. What really matters is to do what the Lord commands, after all, if we heed His counselling we’ll never fail.
The Most High gave Nehemiah many victories; and that’s exactly what will happen to those who pay heed to His Words. He’ll undoubtedly lead you to success. All we have to do is to abide by His commandments to see His glory in our calling.
In Christ, with love,
R. R. Soares
