This verse is an account of when the Jews heard Jesus speak. He is the Word – who became man in an act of love, in order to redeem us from eternal damnation (John 1.1-12). The Jews knew that He was the Messiah, the Savior. Therefore, how could they say that they did not understand the plan? If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin (John 15.22). Those who hear the Lord understand Him!
We do good for humanity. After all, the person who gives ear to what God has used us to speak is saved. On the other hand, to say that you have seen nothing special in the Lord is evil. The Holy Spirit never errs in His mission to convince people of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16.8). Why didn’t they believe in the One who came to give everyone the opportunity to obtain redemption? Wrong decision!
Likewise, Herod could not claim that he was unaware of the sufficient evidence of Jesus’ kingship. He felt the presence of God and the humility of Christ as He answered his questions: Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.” (Luke 23.3). Those who read the Bible, know that it is the Word of God, but by refusing the Truth, say that they have not understood it.
The judgment of the lost happens when they read the Scriptures and claim not to understand them or that later on – they will accept Jesus as Savior. The Master declared: And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (John 3.19). Why do some prefer uncertainty about where they will spend eternity?
The lie is the problem of those who, after hearing the Word, don’t give Jesus the place of Lord and Savior in their hearts. When Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to act disingenuously, the Comforter began to convince them otherwise. When Peter asked the question about the amount received from the sale of the property, the Holy Spirit suggested that they tell the truth, but Ananias refused, and so did his wife, and they both expired (Acts 5.1-10). They were consciously condemned to Hell!
The Master kept silent. The High Priest adjured Jesus, by the living God, to speak the truth: Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 26.64). Christ told that leader that He would soon return on the clouds. This will happen when He comes to take us out of this evil world, condemned to destruction.
The Jews were amazed, because Christ spoke perfectly – with wisdom and simplicity. This fact still happens today, with those who listen to the preaching of the Good News. It is necessary, to be silent during the ministry of the Word, because at that moment, the voice of the Most High is heard. Those who are lost, don’t do this – because they despise the divine will. Believe!
In Christ, with love,
