Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression. (Psalm 19:13)

God’s children should be examples of people protected and helped by the Most High in every way, after all, they are the living letters of Christ which the lost ones will read (II Corinthians 3:3). However, if those who still have not accepted Jesus do not find anything interesting about our faith, how will they seek the Lord?

The psalmist understood that in order to be free from the power of darkness he needed two great blessings: to be delivered from all sins and kept back from presumptuousness, because if he were found wanting, he would have no peace and the wills of the enemy would be fulfilled in his life.

This servant of God, who lived before the coming of Jesus, asked to be freed from all transgressions. For us, such deliverance was provided through Christ’s work at Calvary, taking upon Himself all our sins. So if you have been tempted, immediately go into prayer and confess your sins to the Father because if you allow him, the devil will have dominion over you. Later, however, the shame will come, and your crown will be taken from you (Revelation 3:11).

After making sure his transgressions were taken away, the writer of this psalm also asked the Lord to be kept back from presumptuousness because otherwise it would have dominion over his life. This is very serious, because the presumptuous do not go very far; after all, pride is one of the most dangerous actions of the devil. Almost always, he who is proud is not even aware of its malignancy (Psalm 73:6). The worst thing is that the Spirit of God cannot use the proud because even though he might be hailed as someone special in the Lord\’s work, he lives outside the divine presence. Pride makes people disregard the Father.

The Scriptures warn us that if pride gets to dwell in our hearts, we are one step away from destruction (Proverbs 16:18). The Lord forsakes those who are seduced by this foolish spirit which makes them think they are better and more privileged than other people. But the humble gains God’s favor (Philippians 2:3-11).

With the acquittal of our transgressions and deliverance of haughtiness then we manage to be sincere. This gift is very important because it marks the warriors who obtain victories in the spiritual battles. In contrast, the insincere cannot even beat the weaker demons because they do not have the divine power operating on their behalf at present and neither will they have it in the future. How can someone be successful in this crooked and perverse world if Lord’s authority does not cooperate with him and the prayers of the proud are not taken into account?

The psalmist wraps up by saying that by being freed from presumptuous sins he would be innocent of the great transgression. Dear brethren, do as the Psalmist did if you also want to be freed from darkness and to succeed.

In Christ with love,

R. R. Soares
