“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16: 26)

Modern society’s main goal is to lead a very good and easy life. The riches and the pleasures of this world have overwhelmed people. People don’t choose a career for their vocation; their choice is dependant on the opportunity of making profits it offers them. We have to admit, unfortunately, that many children of God have been carried away by the “song” of Mammon and some of them are even serving him. Where will this lead to? That’s a question nobody dares to answer.

Why do people want to make more money than what they need? Do people really need to taste a different dish every day?  Do we know people through their outfit or through their character? Values have been twisted and that has contaminated even our brothers. Is that something new or has humankind already gone through similar phases before? Well, Jesus said that the days before His coming would be like those before the deluge (Matthew 24: 37-39). At that time, Noah, the preacher, warned people about the destruction that would come onto them; yet, nobody listened to him. History’s being repeated.

The Words of our Master have already been pronounced through questions. We have to give it some thought so that we won’t be found guilty for not listening to Him and being deceived by Mammon. Some people are “killing themselves” to save some money, but “for what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Life here is temporary and it’s shorter than we think. Is it possible to use riches to rescue your soul from the eternal destruction? If that was true many would give all their assets not to go to the world of endless perdition.

Take care not to drink that sort of “liquor” which has intoxicated millions of people all around the world! Some behave dishonestly and think that that they’ll be able to keep money to live a decent life when they’re old. Now, is the divine righteousness blind? Has the devil – the one who uses them – become a good boy so they’ll be turned into a sort of prosperity island by him? Of course not!  The price they’ll pay here along with their eternal suffering won’t be worth such attitude. Only those whose lives are in the hands of the Lord will experience forever and ever the reward for being faithful to the principles established in the Holy Scriptures.

So, make amends with the Lord before you depart for the world of eternal judgment. Determine you won’t do anything wrong to become wealthy because your prosperity must come from the Lord. At all times your hands must be cleansed and ready to be presented to the Most High on the day when you’ll be taking responsibility for your attitudes. It’s pointless to get something which will cause you harm tomorrow. Strive to lay up for yourselves treasures where neither moth nor dust has the power over them (Matthew 6: 19, 20). Be rich in God!

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
