The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

John 18:19

The works of Jesus impress all those who get to know them, so we had better announce to whoever has not yet experienced salvation the things that Christ can do in everyone’s life today. When miracles happen, we must proclaim what the Lord has done in answer to our prayers. In this way, though some people keep their hearts hardened, many will feel God\’s call and will turn to the Gospel.

In the passage quoted above, the high priest was stunned at what he heard concerning the things the disciples of Jesus performed at the behest of the Master. At another moment in time, the Queen of Sheba was also impressed to see the seating of the servants, the service of the waiters and the cupbearers of King Solomon, although they did not perform miracles. The bad thing, though, is when the Lord\’s servants act in a manner which is contrary to what He established for His people because the bad witness borne by a child of God can lead many to eternal damnation.

Now, what we do for Jesus should impress even the highest religious authorities of today. We have the power of the Holy Spirit to heal the sick, cast out demons and change people’s behavior. As a matter of fact, the ability to do the same work done in the days of the earthly ministry of our Savior is in our hands.

The high priest wanted to hear from Christ\’s disciples just as the world wants to know about us today. Some even consider us emotional people; others believe that we act shrewdly. However, there are people who know that our attitudes are taken according to the commandments of the Lord of heaven and earth. Therefore, examine yourself and strive to never be a stumbling stone to anyone.

What bothered the chief of the Jews was the difference between the doctrine of Jesus and what he preached. His biggest surprise was that with His love the Master\’s teachings transformed people, healed the sick, delivered the oppressed and led the people to truly serve God. That man had no such authority, and neither does any religion because only the Gospel is the power of the Lord.

As disciples of Jesus, we are followers of the work which He Himself initiated. So today we can and we must do what Christ accomplished, as declared by the Scriptures (John 14:12). If we do not do so, we shall be held accountable on the Great Day. We must live the Gospel in its fullness because people will pay more attention to what they see in us than to what we say.

Let Jesus’ doctrine transform you!

In Christ with love,

R. R. Soares
