God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those around Him.

Psalm 89.7

The assembly of God’s people is not supposed to be like a reading club, where people gather to discuss about a literary work and show off their knowledge. Of course, looking through a prism, the gospel has much more to offer than the best book ever written, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes (Romans 1.16). Therefore, when we get together and call upon the Lord, he becomes present in our midst, thus rendering it impossible for his works not to be done.

It is our duty to believe in the promises of the Lord so that he may work in our midst as he did in the past, for he is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13.8). When this passage says that “God is greatly to be feared”, we are being challenged to believe in the great wonders done by the Lord’s powerful hands. But if that does not happen, the problem is in us. We have limited our God because we do not truly believe in what he has promised us!

Just like the centurion of Capernaum—whose story is found in Matthews 8.5-13— did, we too can impress the Lord with our affirmation of faith, which is possible to those who believe in God’s Word. Just like the centurion impressed the Lord with his belief, if we dare to trust in that which is ministered to us, we will also see miracles happen. He wants us to make him greatly feared in our midst.

Perhaps God is sometimes disappointed at the worship services we pretentiously minister to him. He promised that where two or three are gathered together in his name, he will be there in the midst of them (Matthew 18.20). Despite knowing that, some preachers invoke the presence of God, but instead of talking about what the Lord can and wants to do, they simply start showing off their own knowledge, which is not only mean, but also dangerous, because he who offers profane fire before the Lord may lose his life (Numbers 3.4)!

The Lord declares that he is “to be held in reverence by all those around Him”. How exactly is that done? When we believe in his Word, we rebuke the enemy, we command all evil to leave our lives, we cast out demons and, under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we declare that the necessary miracle takes place, the Word is fulfilled, because God’s power moves into action and he does whatever needs to be done.

Do not try another way to please the Lord, because, if you do, it will be a waste of time. As an obedient child, believe in what the Word says and ordain your miracle. God is ready to move into action right now—it only depends on you. Do not let him be disappointed with your lack of faith. Stand firm in his promises and demand your rights!

In Christ, with love,
