“An evildoer gives heed to false lips; a liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.” (Proverbs 17:4)

You have certainly heard that popular saying: “Tell me who you walk with and I’ll tell you who you are”. It’s not in the Bible but it has exactly the same meaning as in the verse mentioned above, although not the same strength as the Word of God, which can never be belied.

We can and we must examine those people we consider friends. Look, if their lips are wicked – if they like to speak silly words, lies, obscenities or make evil comments – I’ll tell you something: you’re behaving the wrong way. Those who make friends with people who indulge in idle babblings are undoubtedly practising what the Word condemns even if they’re just listening. Keep away from them! That’s the best thing to do.

The Word of God, our Lord, is His best for us; those who pay heed to it will never stumble because The Word of God is perfect. As a true Father, God’s not only interested in the welfare of His children but He also does all His best to open up their eyes so they’ll flee the cunning tricks of the enemy. Nonetheless, it’s not everybody who pays heed to the divine warnings, and yet such people do not understand the reason why they’re going through so many ordeals!

If you’re having fun with people who tell dirty jokes, who tell lies, who cheat and enjoy profane and idle babblings, you had better open your eyes because you’re walking down a road where your works lack holiness and decency and the devil’s going to be your partner in them. All those who get help from the devil will surely receive a severe punishment after all the evil one has come to kill, to steal and to destroy (John 10:10).

There’s another kind of danger lurking around those who heed the evil tongue, who like to hear dirty jokes, who take pleasure in hearing all the details of someone’s downfall, who watch pornographic movies, filthy soap operas, lustful tales and all kinds of evil talk: those people are possessed by the spirit of lies. Little by little they start to give in; they start to cheat, to twist the facts, to make up situations that might lead many people to being deceived.

If that’s your case, turn to God in prayer, confess your mistake and ask Him for forgiveness. Get rid of everything that might drive you away from the Way of The Truth and bring you suffering. Those whose lips are false and whose tongues are spiteful need to be delivered from sin. The children of God who don’t rebuke them are in agreement with the sin they’re committing and will be held accountable for their fall.

As servants of the divine justice it is our duty to present them the Truth. Let’s not be seduced by sinners; instead, let’s convey the message of the Gospel to them anytime (II Timothy 4:2).

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
