O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

II Samuel 1:21

Saul behaved with a fatal hatred against David. The king of Israel wanted to exterminate the one who, soon afterwards, would become his successor. But David, on account of his respect towards the Word of God, had another feeling. Despite of having had the opportunity to murder Saul, he preferred to respect the existing anointing upon that king. You must never rush to take possession of the place you believe will belong to you. If the Lord has revealed you something, the day the promise to be fulfilled will come. You might even be humiliated or it might even seem impossible for that to come true, just believe in what you’ve been told because those who believe will see the glory of God.

And the day when Saul was defeated by the enemy did come. As the news was broken to Jesse’s son he did not rejoice with it and, on the contrary, he was used to compose a prophetic song. That was a sad day for the people of God because their king had been murdered by the enemy forces. Only those who do not know the fear of the Lord can rejoice with the fall of His. Those who serve our Creator must always be respected, and if, by any chance, any of them is in sin we must not raise our hands to condemn him because he’s another servant (Romans 14:4).

How different an attitude of a true son of God is from that of those that pretend to be so or those that indulge in someone else’s faith! David was taken by the Holy Spirit and he preferred to cast a curse onto the place in which the king of Israel then fell by saying: “O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, nor fields of offerings”. That chain of mountains was cursed due to the fact that the anointed of the Lord had been defeated there. Undoubtedly, the psalmist did not speak his mind himself, but his words came out from the Spirit of the Most High. Before it was a field of offerings but, at that very moment, it would become a land on which no dew or rain would wet its ground.

As we consider the rest of his song we realize how appalled the servant of the Lord was. He said that the fall of Saul was a profanation of the brave ones’ shield. To him, the shield owned by Saul, his anointing, which was the protection of the brave ones in Israel, would never be anointed with oil again.

What a revelation! Being Saul alive, the soldiers were protected by the king’s shield which should always be anointed with oil. Likewise, those who are in the leadership of the people of God must always seek the divine anointing upon the understanding they have in faith. In our mission, we take protection for all the fearless ones in the service of God – only in favour of the brave ones because those who are shy do not take part in the work of the Lord.

In Christ, with love,
