Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven.

Proverbs 23:4-5

The Word is filled with warnings against money making efforts. For many people getting rich is their main goal. However, the servants of God shouldn’t consider it a priority. The right thing to do is to serve the Lord and if He thinks fit to give us wealth, He’ll certainly do it. Jesus taught us that we should first seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and the rest will be added to us (Matthew 6:33).

According to the Most High we should never wear ourselves out in order to get rich. The truth is that if the children of God spent as much energy in His work, – as do those who want to become wealthy by usually amassing meaningless things – the message of salvation would already have been conveyed to the whole world and as a result millions of people would have been saved by now. Preaching the Gospel is the most important work to be done.

We’re endowed with intelligence to do many useful things and when it is applied appropriately we discover many other things that will turn our life easier as for example the healing of diseases that afflict millions of people all over the world. If you pray to the Lord and ask Him to guide you on how to use the wisdom you’ve been given, you’ll surely get an answer from Him. You’ll become a real blessing for our generation if you do the divine will.

The Most High despises material riches as He states that they vanish in the wink of an eye. What’s the point of overworking to obtain things that are worthless to the spiritual realm? Those who are loved by their dearest ones are well aware of how valuable love is. Those who follow the foot steps of Jesus – who went everywhere doing good – know very well how rewarding that is. So, it isn’t worth spending one’s whole life, intellect and body strength to attain what God deems to be of no relevance.

How many people have come to the conclusion that the Almighty is really right? They put so much effort into becoming wealthy, they overworked much harder than they should just to end up enslaved by money, and later when they thought they could enjoy the fruits of their achievements a stroke, an accident or any other tragedy robbed them of the pleasure of enjoying life.

If riches are not in God’s plan for your life, they won’t come with the blessings of the Lord; therefore, they mustn’t be desired nor sought after because the Word states they’ll make themselves wings like an eagle and they’ll fly away toward heaven. What God gives us will never leave us.

A Christian’s true riches are the good works he or she does and the best thing of life is to do the divine will. There’s a lot to be done on behalf of the Kingdom of Heavens in the place the Father has placed you and as a result, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment. God loves everybody but if His love has not reserved riches for you, do not make unnecessary efforts to obtain them because they won’t be good for you.

In Christ, with love,

R. R. Soares
