Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1

One of the characteristics of a man of God is that he never forgets his friends. Crowned King of Israel, David felt he should do right to one who had risked and lost his own life to help him – in this case, Jonathan, son of Saul. Jonathan would be the natural heir to the throne, but because of his father’s madness, God chose the eighth son of Jesse to be shepherd to the children of Jacob. The Most High made it so that the kingdom would be delivered to “a man after His own heart”. (Acts 13:22)

We don’t know why God places so many good people to support us. But often times, when we reach a comfortable and good position, we don’t remember the one who prayed and cried before the Lord in our favor so that He could deliver and free us from the enemy’s traps. Sometimes the people who helped us are now in need, but we don’t even lift a finger to help them. Mercy!

For any and all circumstances in life, it is imperative that we fear the Almighty and live in His presence, otherwise we will never please Him. Those who do not remember to bless those that once were of help to them are paying back the good with evil and this is not right. (Psalm 7:3-5). After all, this is not the way a child of God should act. The person who led you to Christ, inviting and insisting that you come to church must have a special place in your life. What do you have to say about this?

Many times the pastor suffers great hardship to keep up his house and family but doesn’t surrender his calling or responsibility. Much later, when you prosper, you do not remember him or other leaders, who were angels in the church where you were spiritually nourished, or maybe a daughter or son of theirs. Some even criticize and condemn the family of that person who dedicated himself to lift them up, who prostrated himself before God for them to be delivered from the spirit of evil.

David felt touched by the Holy Spirit, but couldn’t remember anybody from Saul’s house that he could honor and support. Even though the previous king’s son had usurped his kingdom and ruled Israel for seven and a half years, while David ruled only from Hebron, the Bethlehemite still wanted to know if a member of Saul’s house needed assistance. Those who possess this kind of spirit please God and are accepted as someone after His own heart. The servants of the Most High are not evil!

They soon told David about Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan who had suffered an accident when still a young child and become lame. (2 Samuel 4:4) David commanded them to call this young man and to restitute Saul’s land to him. From that day on the young man would seat and eat every day at the king’s table right by his side. (2 Samuel 9:6,7) What generosity! My eyes are filled with tears at such love.

Try to find out if your friends or their descendants are in some kind of need or straights and help them out! Those who act in this way please the Lord and gain favor in the presence of the Father. Always heed the bidding and calling of the Holy Spirit, for you will undoubtedly become a person with a heart according to God. Say Yes to Him!

In Christ, with Love,

Oh God! You never abandon us but You speak to our hearts when we are selfish and evil, for us to repent and to do right and good to those who once helped us.

You promise us that Your servants and their seed will be blessed. But incredible as it may seem, we never seek to know how our friends and their relatives are and how we might be able to help them.

Remove all selfishness from our hearts, evil from our mind and vanity from our lives. Because we always want more and more we forget those who have helped us, praying for us and enabled us to fulfill Your plans. Is there someone we can do good to, for the sake of our love for You?
