“Now King David was old, advanced in years; and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm. Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman, a virgin, be sought for our lord the king, and let her stand before the king, and let her care for him; and let her lie in your bosom, that our lord the king may be warm.” (I Kings 1:1-2)
David was undoubtedly a man loved by God; but although he’d been preserved all his life against the onslaughts of the evil one, the Most High didn’t spare him from getting old. In fact, the Almighty God never said He would do that. He fulfils all of His promises but as for all the other things never promised by Him, they will never come to be.
Some people are praying in order not to experience death; others ask for more time on Earth till the second coming of Jesus. My brethren, there’s no answer from God to such prayers because they have no basis on divine promise at all. So, prepare yourselves: we’ll all grow old because we’re all the same.
According to the biblical text King David needed to get warm because he was old, advanced in years. So, a young lady called Abishag was chosen to fulfil that task. Perhaps many will be critical of that, but it was a popular custom in those days. If the chosen woman had been a nurse, she’d even bathe the king or clean him up and nobody would be critical. However, since her duty was to get the old King David warm, many minds might be having lustful ideas about it. If he were a young man he could even have gotten married to her and nobody would say a word.
Spiritually speaking, when the message of the Gospel “gets old” and doesn’t warm up its listeners spiritually, it’s recommended to find a “young lady” – someone fresh and beautiful, committed to holiness, someone who has the strength to do the work, always willing to comfort those in need and being thoroughly consecrated to the Gospel – in order for those who are lost in the aging of religions to be warmed up and to live well.
It was customary in those days to choose a beautiful young lady to warm up the king. Likewise, God’s still looking for that kind of person today. Abishag’s physical beauty typifies the spiritual beauty that those who serve the Most High must have. The message of the Gospel needs to be cuddled in the arms of someone beautiful in order to be “warmed-up”. In this way, many will benefit by the power of Jesus. The Lord will inspire someone to come up with new ideas which will make His message be the answer to the issues of each generation.
My brethren, it was a spiritual matter, so that’s the reason why the king didn’t know her. There’s no record of him not being sexually capable of knowing her; we only know he didn’t do it. And in order to avoid scandals in the work of God we must be dedicated to holiness – we must all be considered eunuchs. When we consecrate ourselves and work in the Lord’s service we take the Good News to the lost ones and it will warm them up spiritually.
In Christ, with love,
