For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
Hebrews 5:12
When we are born we are completely helpless babies until the time when with proper care taken by our parents we grow up and become adults. In a sense, the spiritual life imitates nature: from the moment of our birth in Christ Jesus, we are just like babies who need milk – a kind of food that may seem weak for us but for them is highly important. God feeds us with what is called spiritual milk; however, over time, our body needs something more consistent to satisfy our spiritual hunger.
We go through different stages in our walk with Christ: there is stage of learning in which we are fed with the rational milk of the Word of God, and another one in which the Almighty gives us a different kind of food so that our understanding becomes more mature.
Obviously, according to the biblical passage we are studying today, the Lord\’s plan for us is that we become masters and convey to others the understanding reached in Jesus. God wants us to be mature, ready to take our place as representatives of Christ. In fact, just as the Master was always firm in His decisions, in the ministry of His blessings and in moments of communion with the Father, we must grow to achieve the same spiritual position because otherwise we will fail.
Many Christians, in spite of being on the Way for many years, still have to learn the basic biblical doctrines – which should have happened at the beginning of their conversion. So my brethren, in order for it not to happen to us we must take this as a warning: from now on, we must persevere in the study of the Word and in prayers of consecration, and extract lessons from the biblical revelation that will make us wise in the eyes of the Lord. In so doing, when greater trials come, we will be able to confront them and overcome them. Those, however, who act like children who need milk, will not achieve much in the battles of faith in God.
Our spiritual growth will enable us to be used in great works. In this way, we will be as successful as the heroes of faith, who were not different at all from the present day children of God – except in that they were aware of what they were in the Lord and they knew how to use the power given to them (Hebrews 11).
This is my prayer: that you are a mature Christian, prepared for the battle and for the victory!
