“And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.” (II Samuel 1:12)
Those who belong to God show his or her character at all times, even at the most difficult situations because they always follow the divine instructions found in the Scriptures. Though Saul was determined to put an end to David’s life, David did not have the same intention towards the king. Whenever they are under temptation, those who belong to God react differently from those who are not committed to the Lord.
A true servant of God does not accept help from the enemy because he knows that the Most High does not operate in disagreement with His Word. So, any inspiration that is not derived from the Scriptures undoubtedly comes from the tempter who always takes advantage of an ordeal to interfere. It is not good to accept the devil’s offerings because everything that comes from him causes people to indulge in wrongdoings and they eventually turn away from God.
David did not want Saul to die; He wanted Saul’s heart to be transformed because he respected the anointing that had been poured out on him. Though that king wanted the death of that young man it did not occur. David knew that nothing occurred without the Lord’s permission; that is why we must not only put our trust in our Father but also strive to prevent any wrong feelings from dwelling in our heart. If the devil has a foothold, however insignificant it might be, he will use it to touch those that are obedient to him. Therefore, walk in the Spirit and the enemy will not find any opportunity or a breach through which he will invade your territory.
When the young pastor, persecuted by Saul, heard that the king and his son Jonathan were dead, instead of praising God for the fall of the one who was seeking to get rid of his life, David mourned and wept for Saul and for Jonathan until morning. David took hold of his
own clothes and tore them and those who were with him did the same. They wept for the king, for his son and for Israel because they had fallen by the sword. That kind of attitude always pleases the Lord.
The future king David had high thoughts, for he knew the value of the anointing poured on somebody consecrated for the ministry. With the massive progress of conversions in our country lots of people are hastily raised as heads of a ministry; many of them are not prepared because they still think like the worldly people. Nonetheless, we should respect those who have truly been called by the Lord; those who were anointed to do the divine work.
David’s attitude was like sowing a seed of divine things in the hearts of his assistants. One day he would reap much more than he had sown.
In Christ, with love,
