“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matthew 6:22)

A human being is made up of three parts – the spirit, our true person; the soul, our mind and memory and our body – our physical element. The spirit has the Word of God as its Lamp (Psalm 119:105). We’re enlightened by it and we transform our way of thinking with it. The body has the eyes as its Lamp; the whole body will shine if they’re good.

We can make our eyes be good or evil. When something wrong draws our attention, we must turn our eyes away from it. However, if we take pleasure in a sinful life and yield to it, our body will pay the price. If we live wisely, by avoiding wrongdoings, choosing our friends, the places we go, what food to eat and our thoughts, our body will surely be thankful.

A bad feeling we might have against someone will do harm to our bodies. Difficult situations are also so harmful that the wisest thing to do is to pay them no notice. At all times, even against our will, we must control ourselves and obey the divine commandments because only they will make us feel good. Any forbidden feeling will cause tremendous harm to our health.

People who have served God and obtained victory found out the secret to living well. Nobody who is mean, vindictive, and envious or has any other similar personality flaw has ever been successful in their spiritual life. Look at the jealous Saul: Even though he’d been chosen by the Lord to become the first king of Israel and reigned forty years, he was full of envy towards David and sought to murder him (I Samuel 8 – 31). Had he been wise, Saul would’ve backed the chosen of God and his story would have had a very happy ending.

The same can be said about Judas Iscariot who had the privilege to take part of Jesus’ group of apostles. He was handpicked by the King of the Universe to be part of the most privileged team of the world; however, first he let the spirit of theft possess him (John 12:6) and, secondly, he sold himself to the spirit of treason (Matthew 26:47-49). What an unhappy end!

King David must have been an exemplary father because he knew the Word of God very well, more than any of us. His children must have been given the best education and upbringing both through his mouth and his attitudes. Yet, one of them was carried away by the demon of sensuality and eventually raped his sister, so he paid with his own life for such act of insanity (II Samuel 13). Do all your best so your eyes will be good and your whole body will be enlightened!

In Christ with love,

R. R. Soares
