“I said, “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked are before me.” (Psalm 39:1)
One of the big mistakes committed by the people of God is to suppose that something must be done in the way they see fit and then, without consulting the Word of the Lord, they adopt that idea or behavior as though it were legitimate. Well, the product of our mind cannot be the standard of living of those who truly serve the Father. We must be guided by the eternal foundation, the Word of the Lord, and not by our reasoning or by our inspiration. The councils of the Roman church caused it to drift so far away from the Truth that it became just one more religion. The same mistake has been committed by several Evangelical churches.
Christians know that they should not upset the Lord. If He doesn’t support your attitudes, your decisions and your conduct in the light of the Word of God, your heart will hesitate because nothing else in this world is so good a basis as It is. Then your heart starts to find out ways that are not good and since you don’t want to displease God you begin to treat the Lord as an angry, raging and extremely wrathful Being. As you drift away from the Truth, your mind comes up with the weirdest and the most intricate doctrines, but none of them can please the Most High since He doesn’t receive testimony from men (John 5:34) or honor that comes from humans (John 5:41).
In their reverie, some people make preposterous promises such as “I’m not going to have a hair cut for a certain period of time”; “I’m not going to sleep with my spouse for a certain period of time”; “I’ll wear only white or blue clothes”; “I won’t eat meat” and whatnot. Some people promise to get on their knees and pray every day for a certain amount of hours uninterruptedly or to read a certain number of chapters of the Bible. If you have made similar decisions, ask the
Lord for forgiveness and stop doing that right away because such things are nothing but wills of the flesh.
The psalmist was worried about committing a sin with his tongue, but if he spoke the Word of God he knew he’d never make a mistake. He, who declares the eternal Truth commits no error, hurts no one and gives no foothold to the enemy because he owes nothing to anyone. Their behavior is always based on what the Scriptures say and they’ll never make any mistake. But, if you make any decision contrary to the Word of God you won’t be pleasing the Lord.
Another important aspect to be pointed out here is that we must have no respect for the wicked that drifted away from God and didn’t heed His instructions. We simply can’t seal our lips and refrain from talking about the eternal Truth. Those who belong to the Lord must never let fear overcome them and neither should they respect the presence of those who aren’t in communion with the Heavens.
The best thing of life is living without condemnation. Those who respect the Holy Book and whose lives are guided by the Eternal Scriptures live in the presence of God.
In Christ, with love,
R. R. Soares
