12/02/2013 - Take off your shoes

Machado

Young Joshua had just taken over the post of commander and leader of the Hebrews; his mission was to introduce the people into the Promised Land, and his first GREAT CHALLENGE was right in front of him.

The city to be conquered was called Jericho, and it was surrounded by a wall. This makes it easy to see that, in fact, Joshua was going to need a lot of God’s help to overcome his first great challenge.

If we put ourselves in Joshua’s place we can feel what he must have felt in that moment. Error was not an option, for all of his people were depending upon his success. He could not count on the master Moses; everything was now in his hands. To be the head of a church, of a country, of a family, of a company, of a team, or of a group—to have the lives of many depending upon your actions—is a very big responsibility. That’s what Joshua felt, the burden of leadership.

It was in the midst of these feelings of anxiety, concern, apprehension, and expectation, that Joshua had an unforgettable experience with the Lord, which serves us as a great example.

Shortly before conquering Jericho, the Bible says that Joshua was standing before the city. He looked and saw an angel with a sword in his hand, and when Joshua saw that it was an angel of the Lord, he said to him the same thing you and I would say.

“What does my Lord say to His servant?” Joshua 5.14

At that moment, Joshua understood that God was on his side, and that his was a divine cause. When he asked the angel how to proceed, what was the revelation, what was the angels advice?

To his surprise, the answer to his question was only…… “Take your sandals off your feet…”

In other words, Joshua needed to understand that it was not necessary for him to be anxious, worried, concerned, none of that. God was helping him and all he had to do was “respect the Word of God” – “Take off your shoes”.

In our case it is no different. It doesn’t matter who you are, or if you are facing some situation that leaves you a bit insecure, or tense. It’s no use waiting for someone to come to you and tell you something that will solve all your daily problems. It is better to trust the Lord, take off your shoes. (Respect the Word, and victory will certainly come.)
