12/02/2013 - What happened to Elisha?

Machado

The story begins when a shunammite woman offers refuge to a prophet in her house because she believed him to be a “holy man of God” 2 Kings 4.9. As a gesture of appreciation, the prophet performs a miracle in the name of God, turning the lady into a mother, which seemed humanly impossible. One day, as the child grew older, he went to the fields with his father and was struck by a strong pain that led to his death. His mother placed him on the bed as he was already dead, and went to look for the prophet Elisha. When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why?” 2 Kings 4.27

Elisha declared with his own lips that something wrong was happening, and he didn’t know what it was. Something was going on in the spiritual world and the Lord had not revealed it to him. What might have happened? Could it just be one of those days that for some reason we don’t feel in tune with the throne of God? Often, we face difficulties and because we lack a more intense communion with the Lord, we don’t know what to do. Elisha immediately goes to the woman’s house. When he gets there, he enters the room where the boy was lying dead, closes the door and begins to pray. If we notice some earlier episodes in the life of the prophet, he performed some great miracles just saying words or in an act of faith. But this time things seemed a little more complicated and so he isolated himself to pray! It is a great virtue when the person recognizes when something is not going well and seeks the Lord for a response. After praying, he lies down near the boy and to his surprise, nothing happens. What a spiritual battle! So the prophet begins to walk from one side of the house to the other, just like when a person is anxious and restless about something. An internal battle was taking place. The prophet knew that the woman believed he was a Holy Man of God, and now he could not open the door and tell her there was nothing he could do.
My dear reader, don’t allow things to end this way. Enter the battle and go until the end, for you will see the miracle. In the following verse, we see the boy rise up from death and the prophet hand him alive to his mother.
Remember, you have been called to be in communion with God, to know exactly what to do and what to say once you face these circumstances. In another passage of the life of Elisha, we see exactly how the lives of those who live in symphony with God are. Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, tries to fool him telling him not to go anywhere. But this time he found Elisha in full symphony, which said to him: “Don’t lie… didn’t my heart go with you?” Halleluiah!!! “Isn’t it good to walk in communion with God and know exactly what is going on in the spiritual world?” That’s how God wants you.
“His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.” Isaiah 28.26
Seek the communion, for that you have been called. May the Lord bless you.
In Crist,
Reverend José Machado
