Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. (I Corinthians 10:12)
This passage begins with a warning about temptation: the stronger we think we are, the more watchful we must be lest we fall. The Bible teaches us that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18).
Now, what is the secret to overcome temptation? The following verses show that the answer is vigilance and active prayer to the Holy Spirit:
• Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
• Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”(Luke 22:46)
• Then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, (II Peter 2:9)
May we find strength in the Lord to overcome these temptations whenever they present themselves to us.
