12/02/2013 - I want to get married, now what? Part II

Christian Life

As we learned in part I, Abraham was blessed in all things, that is, he had the financial resources to support his son’s Isaac future family. Now we are going to see, based on the Bible, what Abraham’s servant did to choose the right person.
You recall that, following Abraham’s instructions, his servant went to look for a wife for his son among his relatives (Chapter 24:4). Based on this command, Christians should look for their partners among their equals.
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:14: Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
Abraham prayed for an angel to go ahead of his servant, so that the chosen spouse would not contaminate his lineage, since God had blessed him so abundantly.
Lets see what Abraham’s servant did to find the right person. First he prayed to God and established the profile of the person to be chosen.
Genesis 24:12-14
Then he said, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
His choice was not based on physical aspects, not that it’s unnecessary, but the profile of the chosen one has to be approved by God.
It’s also important to point out that Abraham’s servant waited for the right moment. I can imagine that many of the young ladies that saw him standing by the well were scared, or afraid of coming closer. But he never revealed the purpose that was in his heart. He waited for someone to come and offer water for his camels, just like he had prayed; because that was the sign that she was the one chosen by God
We can learn a lot from this servant’s attitude. We must never reveal the purposes in our hearts, until we are sure of God’s approval.
A lot of people make mistakes because they don’t wait patiently on the Lord and tell everyone what kind of person they want to meet. There is a big chance that they will be fooled. You must know how to wait until He speaks to your heart as He selects the right person for you. By doing this, both of you will serve Him with love and gratitude.
We will continue this subject in our next article.
