“ I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”.(Romans 7.15).

Many of God´s children are living a great dilema. When they are sober, they cherish from the presence of God in their lives and know they cannot practice certain acts. The truth is that when they practice such acts they feel like the most miserable people on Earth. With their hearts filled with sadness, they truly repent and promise the Lord they will never commit that error.

However, when temptation comes, they simply can´t resist because of their desires and cries and they fall once again. What is wrong with these people?

In the verse above, Paul makes an amazing confession. Paul, the great apostle, showed through his writings that he lived the same drama that many today have experienced. We understand that this is a common problem to all of God´s children because we are still in the flesh; some more and some less, but overall, we all have to fight against our human nature. Chapter seven of the book of Romans helps us understand this matter some more. Below are some biblical characters that help illustrate reality and make easier for us to understand on how to deal with such problem.

Saul, an extreme case – We notice in Saul´s life, the first monarch of Israel, to what extreme a person can get to. That ´s why he was condemned by the Lord not to keep on ruling over God´s people; because of his disobedience and continuous evil actions, and a demon took possession of him and had him commit very strange attitudes. It all began when the women of Israel – were pleased with the arrival of a new hero, David, who was an instrument of God to deliver that nation – sang joyful songs which said David had accomplished ten times more than Saul (I Samuel 18.7). The king got jealous and decided to kill David: And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David. Saul had a spear in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice. (I Samuel 18.9 – 11).

David did not resist – There is a stain on the character of he who the Lord God called a man after His own heart.

David, the second king of the Hebrews – he who had his heroic accomplishments sung in verses -, on a certain afternoon, when he woke up from sleeping after lunch, he went for a walk in the terrace of his house. There he saw a beautiful woman who was bathing herself out in the open. King David did not contain himself and did all he could to take hold of that woman. As it always happens – and the Bible warns us about it – deep calls unto deep (Psalms 42.7a), so much so that the end of such act was the death ( cruelly planned by David himself) of the husband of that woman, and God´s condemnation in the life of the anointed man of the Lord.

Peter acted cowardly – The moment the Lord Jesus told Peter that the devil had asked Him to sift Peter and walk around him (Luke 22.31), the disciple did not believe in the warning, and fell into sin when he called the Lord a liar (I John 5.10). Following that, Peter committed yet another mistake: for three times he denied knowing the Lord Jesus, fearing for his life, when he had said before that he was ready to die for the Lord ((Mark 14.31) and had shown to be ready when he cut off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest´s servant (John 18.10).

I will never drive him away – Many people fall because they do not have a deeper understanding of the Word of God, therefore they go through similar hardships. Some people turn themselves to God, and with sad hearts they ask Him for forgiveness, which they certainly obtain. Such people overcome their problems when they turn back to the Lord in communion. Others, however, despite having the testimony of the Holy Spirit in them regarding their mistakes, they feel remorse but do not repent. Such people act like Judas Iscariot, who was aware of his mistake, but did not repent, averted from God and committed suicide.

The true Gospel of the Kingdom of heavens must be preached will all the depth of its integrity. It is necessary to differ it from the Law. You cannot run over such clarifying declarations that came from the Lord Jesus´ lips. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. (John 6.37).

Christ said He will by no means drive away whoever comes to Him, therefore we can rejoice and cry out with our lungs, like the apostle Paul did, by saying: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord! (Romans. 8.35,38,39).

Every person, who one day, heard God´s call and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, can and must declare before any insinuation of the enemy, that it is impossible to be separated from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

The devil cannot and will not – The lack of knowledge on the revelations done by the Lord Jesus allows the enemy to deceive many of God´s children. The are some who are genuinely saved but live in constant defeat; they consider themselves a lost case since they do not know that what they are feeling is a fabrication from hell, it´s a lie and a spiritual nightmare.

Those who commit an error are in a weak spiritual position and can be attacked by Satan with all kinds of suffering; from a moral pain to a physical, financial, family and so on. However, this person may never be snatched from the hands of the Lord Jesus. He assures us: My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.(Jo 10.27,28). All those who heard the Lord´s voice one day and followed Him are included in this declaration. Truly this is a reason for great joy, for not even the devil will be able to snatch them from God.

Perhaps some people can still be undecided about the possibility of being snatched from the Lord´s hand, and because of that, Christ was even clearer when he declared: My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. (John 10.29).What do you say now?

Paul´s sincerity – The apostle did not show weakness when he made himself clear and showed that his inner struggle was about dealing with sin. Paul showed that this is common to all men and women but there is a way out: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1.8-9).
